Cameron Artis-Payne News
The Carolina Panthers re-signed running back Cameron Artis-Payne to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday. The team's fifth-round pick in 2015 has averaged 4.2 yards per carry in his first four NFL seasons, but he's too far down on the depth chart to have any real fantasy value in 2019. CAP has 118 career carries for 491 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He had 19 carries for 69 rushing yards and one touchdown last season. He can be ignored by fantasy owners unless Christian McCaffrey suffers an injury.
After the Carolina Panthers did not address the position in the NFL draft, running back Cameron Artis-Payne will get a real shot for a bigger role alongside Christian McCaffrey in 2018. As of now, Fozzy Whittaker is the only other running back on the roster. The Panthers are likely to address the position with a veteran on the open market, but CAP should see a much bigger role after carrying the ball just 18 times for 95 yards and a score in 2017. If Artis-Payne is the main back alongside McCaffrey this season, he could have RB3/flex value in deeper leagues.
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said running back Cameron Artis-Payne "will most certainly get that opportunity" to replace Jonathan Stewart as the power back for the team. Artis-Payne might be intriguing as a touchdown-dependent fantasy option in 2018, but the Panthers are also a good bet to address the running back position early in the draft. Take a wait-and-see approach on CAP this year. The 27-year-old had a career-low 18 carries for 95 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and one touchdown in 2017.
