Clay Matthews News
Despite not being able to come to an agreement with the Denver Broncos after visiting them, free-agent linebacker Clay Matthews remains open to play in 2020, "provided it's the right opportunity for him and his family," agent Ryan Williams said in a statement. The Broncos are looking for some linebacking help after releasing Todd Davis and after the season-ending ankle injury to Von Miller this week, but Matthews apparently wasn't the right fit. Ten of his 11 seasons in the league were with Green Bay, and he spent 2019 with the Rams. Matthews is no longer an elite pass-rushing linebacker, but he'd be a good veteran presence in the right locker room for a team that has a chance to compete in 2020. The 34-year-old actually posted eight sacks last year, which was his highest total since 2014.
The Arizona Cardinals haven't been shy about adding older pass-rush specialists in the past, and linebacker Clay Matthews could fit that role again in 2020. Multiple personnel people have openly stated that the goal is to have the pass-rush unit work on a rotational basis and have a lot of bodies cycling in and out regularly, so it wouldn't be surprising for the team to add another pass-rusher to the squad. It seems unlikely that the Cardinals will make a huge splash by chasing someone like Jadeveon Clowney, but a recently released veteran like Matthews could fit the bill as a complementary piece.
The Los Angeles Rams released linebacker Clay Matthews on Thursday, according to a source. In an effort to shed salary cap space, the Rams also released star running back Todd Gurley on Thursday. Matthews is nearing the end of his career, but he was still plenty productive in 13 games in his only season with the Rams in 2019, notching eight sacks, 37 tackles (27 solo), nine tackles for loss, 11 QB hits and two forced fumbles. The long-time Green Bay Packer can still play and can get after the quarterback, but he's not much of an IDP option at this point in his career. He hasn't made a Pro Bowl since 2015.
