Torrey Smith News
Free-agent wide receiver Torrey Smith announced his retirement on Friday, wrapping up a career that included 5,141 yards and two Super Bowl titles. A prestigious deep threat during his career, Smith entered 2019 ranked third in yards per catch (16.1) among active wideouts behind DeSean Jackson (17.4) and Josh Gordon (17.3). The 30-year-old played eight seasons with the Ravens, 49ers, Eagles and Panthers. The 2011 second-round pick of Baltimore had his best season in 2013, finishing with 65 catches for 1,128 yards and four touchdowns.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Torrey Smith agreed to take a pay cut of $2 million this year, according to a source. Smith was due a non-guaranteed $5 million salary in 2019 but is now owed a base salary of $2 million with $1 million more in incentives. The move creates $2 million in salary cap space. The 30-year-old remains a deep threat but had just 17 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns and was a fantasy non-factor in 11 games last year. Coupled with the questions surrounding quarterback Cam Newton's shoulder, Smith is only attractive in deep standard-scoring leagues, and even then he's likely to make much noise.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Torrey Smith (knee) is active for Week 12 against the Seahawks. Smith has been out since Oct. 21 and should help with Devin Funchess (back) being out against Seattle. However, Smith wasn't a very big part of the passing game before his injury and will remain a WR4/5 as a boom/bust deep threat. Rookie DJ Moore will probably be quarterback Cam Newton's No. 1 passing target with Funchess being inactive.
