The Atlanta Falcons have told wide receiver Julio Jones that he will not receive a new deal before the regular season begins, but they hope he still reports for training camp at the end of this month. The Falcons told Jones they hadn't budgeted a renegotiation this offseason and could not rework his deal at this time. Jones is two years into a five-year deal and the front office has prioritized extensions for defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, left tackle Jake Matthews and safety Ricardo Allen over Jones. The star receiver held out of organized team activities and minicamp to show his displeasure over his contract, but it's unclear if he'll miss any of training camp. Contract issues aside, he should remain a high-end WR1 in an offense that should take a step forward from disappointment in 2017.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has been downplaying wide receiver Julio Jones' absence at minicamp this week and expects him to show up when he holds informal workouts next month. Ryan plans to hold unscheduled practices with teammates in South Florida before training camp. Jones has been away from the team while seeking a new contract. He has three years and $35 million remaining. Don't read too much into Jones' absence. He should remain a WR1 and will come off the board in the early rounds. Jones should be able to improve in the touchdown department in Year 2 under offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is not reporting for mandatory minicamp this week, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff. "We have been in contact with Julio and his representation. We will not discuss those conversations publicly except to say we feel they have been productive and constructive. We understand the concerns and thoughts from their perspective. Although not ideal, Julio informed us today he would not be attending mini-camp," Dimitroff said. Jones is officially holding out as he seeks a new deal. The 29-year-old has been dinged up a bit in recent years but hasn't missed any time really and remains an elite WR1.
