Brian Winters News
New York Jets offensive guard Brian Winters (abdomen) continues to rest and he is unlikely to play during the preseason. The offensive line has been banged up early on, as OT Ben Ijalana (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, while OT Kelvin Beachum (foot) has been sidelined due to a foot ailment. The offensive line has been patchwork for most of training camp, which makes the successful early returns of rookie quarterback Sam Darnold and the rest of the offense all the more impressive. If Darnold and the other QBs wish to stay whole, they'll need veterans like Beachum and Winters to get healthy in a hurry. Both are expected to be fine for Week 1, but they could be rusty.
With the Jets heading to Pittsburgh in Week Five, their running game, especially Matt Forte, already didn't have the best of projections. The Steelers are only allowing 78.2 rushing yards-per-game (fifth best in the league), and that includes a 4.0 yards-per-carry figure. Now, Jets right guard Brian Winters has been diagnosed with a concussion after head-butting Michael Bennett of the Seahawks in the second quarter yesterday. While he's not being ruled out for Sunday, chances probably aren't great that he plays. This is a solid loss for Matt Forte and the Jets run game as a whole, who already had their work cut out for them. If you have other options with better matchups, you might want to look in that direction in Week Five.
