Robert Alford News
The Arizona Cardinals re-signed cornerback Robert Alford to an undisclosed one-year deal on Friday, according to a source. Arizona released him from his large contract -- he made nearly $15 million the last two years -- after he missed the last two seasons due to injury. Releasing Alford on Wednesday saved the team $7.5 million in salary cap space, as he was set to make $9 million in 2021. He will now be allowed to fight for a starting cornerback role. The 32-year-old signed a three-year, $22.5 million deal in 2019 to be the No. 2 alongside Patrick Peterson, but injuries have kept him off the field. He broke his leg late in August of 2019 and suffered a torn pectoral muscle last season. Alford had 50 tackles and 11 passes defended with the Falcons in 2018 but also struggled through an ankle injury.
Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Robert Alford (pectoral) tore his pectoral muscle and will miss the entire 2020 season, according to a source. Alford missed all of last season, too, after breaking his leg, so this is a tough blow for the 31-year-old from Southeastern Louisiana. He will undergo surgery to fix his torn pec. He was entering his eighth season in the NFL. With Alford out for the year, Byron Murphy or Kevin Peterson will have to step up at cornerback across from Patrick Peterson for the Cardinals.
Arizona Cardinals cornerback Robert Alford (pectoral) suffered a pectoral injury in practice on Sunday, according to sources. The team is in the process of evaluating him to see how long he'll be sidelined. Alford missed all of the 2019 season with a broken leg, so both he and the Cardinals are hoping his latest injury isn't nearly as serious. The 31-year-old came to the desert after spending the first six seasons of his career in Atlanta, where he had 250 solo tackles, 10 interceptions, two touchdowns and 85 passes defensed in 88 games. Alford can be ignored in IDP leagues.
