Desmond Trufant News
The New Orleans Saints are expected to sign veteran cornerback Desmond Trufant after they worked him out on Monday, according to a source. Trufant suffered a groin injury early in training camp with the Chicago Bears and was released last week. The 30-year-old also took some time away from football after the death of his father. Trufant still has talent, but injuries have caused him to miss 17 of 32 games over the last two seasons. At the very least, he'll provide the New Orleans secondary with plenty of experience and depth to begin the 2021 regular season. The Saints defense as a whole should be considered a low-end starting unit early on, but we'd recommend using a different defense in Week 1 when they face the Green Bay Packers.
Former Detroit Lions cornerback Desmond Trufant is signing an undisclosed one-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Friday, according to a source. The Lions released Trufant at the beginning of March after he struggled through injuries the last two seasons. His addition will help offset the loss of Pro Bowl cornerback Kyle Fuller, whose official release should go through on Friday. The 30-year-old played in just 15 games the last two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and Lions, recording 29 solo tackles (two for loss), five interceptions, 11 passes defensed and one sack. He played in just six games for Detroit in his lone season in 2020. The 2015 Pro Bowler will provide a veteran presence in Chicago's secondary if he can stay on the field.
The Detroit Lions informed starting cornerback Desmond Trufant that he will be released at the start of the new league year on March 17, according to a source. Detroit signed the former first-round pick last year to try and replace Darius Slay, who was traded to the Eagles. But Trufant wound up playing in just six games and had one interception, four passes defensed and one sack on 20 tackles. He was one of the better cornerbacks in the league in his early days with Atlanta, but Trufant has missed a total of 17 games due to injuries in the last two seasons. The 30-year-old was due a base salary of $9.5 million in 2021, with $3.5 million guaranteed. Cutting him will save the Lions $6.187 million on the salary cap with $6 million in dead money.
