San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman pointed out a tell of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's during offseason workouts. "You just need to read him—hand off ball; he's letting it go. You have to be decisive when you make those decisions. If he takes his hand off the ball and doesn't throw it, I think he'll throw guys off, but when he takes his hand off the ball, you've got to be ready to break," Sherman said. It's something to take note of, but Garoppolo and San Fran's coaching staff will undoubtedly work to correct that before Week 1. Garoppolo is still very raw and has a small sample size as far as NFL stats, but he looks to be the real deal and is in a great place under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He's a low-end QB1 target or excellent backup QB.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is due $42.6 million in the first year of his five-year, $137.5 million contract. The 49ers have nearly $80 million in available salary cap space, so it makes sense for them to front load Garoppolo's contract. Garoppolo will then earn $18.6 million in 2019 before taking home another $25.2 million in 2020. It is a huge financial commitment for a player who has made just seven career starts, but if Garoppolo plays the way he did last season, he will be worth the money.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo inked a five-year contract with San Francisco to forgo free agency, according to Raj Mathai of NBC Bay Area. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network confirmed the deal and the terms; Garoppolo will make $137.5 million, the largest deal in NFL history on a per-year basis. This contract will likely set the market for quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency and also will set a figure in place for contract extensions for Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan. Acquired by the 49ers from the Patriots earlier this season, Garoppolo started and won five games for San Francisco in 2017, finishing the year with 1,560 yards, seven touchdown passes and five interceptions while completing 67.4 percent of his passes. He also added a rushing touchdown, and his play in 2017 puts him on the QB1 spectrum heading into 2018.
