Timmy Jernigan News
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed seventh-year defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan on Monday to replace defensive lineman Rodney Gunter, who announced his retirement on Sunday. Jernigan agreed to a deal with the Texans in the spring before the deal fell through. The 27-year-old will help the Jaguars defensive line after both Al Woods and Lerentee McCray opted out of the 2020 season amid concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yannick Ngakoue, who has yet to sign his franchise tag, remains away from the team. Jernigan spent the last three years with the Eagles and had two sacks and 10 tackles in 10 games as a rotational lineman last season.
Free-agent defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan had reached an agreement on a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Houston Texans, but the two sides have agreed to part ways and Jernigan is not expected to sign with the team, according to sources informed of the situation. Jernigan didn't take a physical with the Texans and isn't expected to do so. He was previously cleared by spinal specialist Robert Watkins after playing in just 13 games in the last two seasons due to neck and foot injuries. A second-round pick of the Ravens in 2014, the 27-year-old had his best season in Baltimore in 2016, recording five sacks, 31 combined tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. He'll look for another one-year deal on the open market now that he's parted ways with Houston.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Tim Jernigan (foot) suffered a broken foot in the Week 2 loss to the Falcons and is expected to miss four to six weeks. The good news is that Jernigan won't need surgery, so he should be back later this season. Philly has good depth up front on the defensive line, but they may be a little more vulnerable to opposing ground games moving forward, especially with Malik Jackson also done for the season. The Eagles will take on Kerryon Johnson and the Lions at home in Week 3.
