Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II said that kicker Chris Boswell, who is due a $2 million roster bonus in March, is expected to be on the roster in training camp this summer. However, Rooney said that general manager Kevin Colbert will be looking to give Boswell competition after he struggled in 2018. Boswell made just 13 of his 20 field-goal attempts and missed five extra points after signing an extension last fall. That extension is really the only thing that kept him from losing his job, and he'll have to step it up if he wants to keep it in 2019.
The Pittsburgh Steelers placed kicker Chris Boswell on Injured Reserve with an undisclosed injury on Friday and signed kicker Matt McCrane in a corresponding move. The team stuck with Boswell this season after signing him to an extension in the fall, but he was terrible for the most part, missing seven of his 20 field-goal attempts and five extra points out of 48 tries. McCrane was 5-for-9 on field goals for the Raiders in his rookie year before being cut. He won't be a fantasy option in Week 17 against the Bengals.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will continue to run with kicker Chris Boswell after he made a big kick late in the Week 15 win over the Patriots. However, he also missed a 32-yard kick in the third quarter. "He's our kicker from start to finish and I liked the way he came back and banged that next opportunity, and that is what this thing [football] is about," Tomlin said. "You are going to be tested, we are going to be tested, sometimes you are going to fail but you better pass enough of them." Boswell has made only 11 of 18 field-goal tries this year and has also missed five extra points. Despite the coaching staff having his back, Boswell will be a shaky fantasy kicker in Week 16 against the Saints.
