The Chicago Bears have found their kicker, agreeing in principle with free-agent kicker Cody Parkey, per NFL.com. Parkey converted on 21 of 23 attempts last season for the Dolphins and stabilizes a position that was shaky at best last year for the Bears. Chicago went through several kickers last year, and the veteran kicker is re-united with special teams coach Chris Tabor from their days in Cleveland. Parkey for his career has converted 86 percent of his kicks but has struggled with kicks beyond 40 yards. In his career, he has converted only 66 percent of his kick attempts between 40 and 49 yards. But the Bears apparently feel strongly that his best days are still ahead.
The Miami Dolphins seem to have known what they were doing when they suddenly dumped incumbent kicker Andrew Franks for Cody Parkey just before the season began. Parkey's Dolphins debut was as good as it gets for a placekicker. He went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder with just over a minute left in the game to seal a victory. While points for any kicker may fluctuate on a weekly basis and are hard to predict, Parkey showed a reliable leg and proved to be cool under pressure. He may turn into a viable streamer for those who switch kickers on a weekly basis.
Miami Dolphins kicker Andrew Franks seemed set to reprise his role as the team's kicker, especially when they didn't bring any competition for him in training camp. That all changed in a heartbeat when they released Franks on Sunday in favor of ex-Browns kicker Cody Parkey, who was cut himself days ago. Parkey lost out to rookie Zane Gonzalez in Cleveland, but has a Pro Bowl season under his belt in 2014 after breaking the rookie record for points with 150 that year. Franks was 29 for 37 in field goal attempts as the Dolphins' kicker the last two seasons and had a good preseason, which made the move somewhat surprising. Parkey doesn't figure to be draft-worthy as a starting kicker, but could serve as a decent streamer down the road.
