Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said that running back Devonta Freeman (groin), who had successful groin surgery on Thursday, could come off Injured Reserve to play again this year. However, his return will likely depend on where the team stands in the playoff picture. Freeman would be eligible to return on Dec. 23 against the Panthers. By then, most fantasy leagues are already in the thick of the playoffs, so Freeman can be dumped in single-year formats. In his absence, Tevin Coleman and rookie Ito Smith will share the backfield duties.

Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (groin) will undergo surgery on his groin in Philadelphia on Thursday, according to a source. Freeman was placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday and will be out for at least the next eight weeks. It means he's unlikely to contribute much to close out the year if he even returns. He'll go down as a big early-round bust for fantasy owners. Tevin Coleman and rookie Ito Smith will continue to split the backfield with Freeman sidelined. Coleman will remain an RB2, while Smith will be more of a touchdown-dependent RB3/flex.

Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (foot, groin) will be placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday. This is an unexpected move and a huge blow to the Falcons offense as well as Freeman's fantasy owners. Freeman injured his knee in the season opener against the Eagles, missed three weeks and then hurt his foot upon his return. He had just 14 carries for 68 yards and five catches for 23 yards in those two games. It's unclear if he has a chance to return later this season, so fantasy owners should put him in an IR spot if they have one available. Tevin Coleman has been a lackluster RB2 with Freeman banged up, but he should continue seeing most of the workload going forward. Rookie Ito Smith will be his complement and is now worth scooping up in most leagues as a touchdown-dependent RB3/flex, especially if you own Coleman or Freeman.
