Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen signed a two-year extension worth $8.55 million on Thursday, according to a source. The deal has a max value of $10.05 million, which could make him the highest paid tight end in the league. A broken foot limited Olsen to a career-low seven games last season, and he wasn't his normal self when he returned. He ended up catching just 17 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown. The 33-year-old could be a bounce-back candidate as a midrange TE1 in Carolina's new offense this year.
Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen (foot) said his foot is completely healed heading into offseason workouts. His priority is to get a contract extension before the season, so it sounds as though Olsen is set on playing at least a few more seasons. A foot injury limited Olsen to just seven games last year and snapped his streak of three straight seasons with 1,000-plus yards. Even at 33 years old, Olsen could return to the 1,000-yard mark in 2018 if he can stay healthy with new offensive coordinator Norv Turner looking to push the ball downfield more often. Olsen could be a value pick as a midrange TE1 in fall drafts.
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said tight end Greg Olsen (foot) won't need a second surgery on his foot. Olsen has been running and doing bike work already. Olsen had a frustrating year in 2017 because of his injury, catching a career-low 17 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown in seven games, and he was inconsistent after returning late in the year. Olsen considered retirement, but he is all in for 2018 and should be a TE1 again this year if he's healthy.
