According to a report from long-time Cleveland Browns beat reporter Tony Grossi, Carlos Hyde is expected to open the season as the team's starting running back. Hyde signed with the team as a free agent this offseason but the selection of Nick Chubb in April's draft cast some uncertainty over what Hyde's role would be. Grossi expects Chubb to spell Hyde in the early going, although it wouldn't be a surprise to see Chubb eventually overtake Hyde as the team's lead back at some point during the season. They will most likely cut into each other's production this season, leaving neither as a reliable fantasy option.

According to a tweet from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, free-agent running back Carlos Hyde is expected to sign with the Cleveland Browns. Hyde will get a three-year deal worth over $15 million, including $6 million in the first year. Hyde should inherit the early-down role which Isaiah Crowell held the previous season while getting spelled by Duke Johnson on passing downs. This signing adds intrigue to the upcoming NFL draft, as it likely precludes the Browns from using an early pick on Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team had contract discussions with impending free-agent running back Carlos Hyde throughout the season. They haven't been able to come to an agreement, but the 49ers have continued discussions with Hyde, although nothing is imminent. Hyde had a career-high 240 carries for 940 yards (career-low 3.9 yards per carry) and a career-high eight touchdowns, but it seems as though the 49ers are ready to move on, as Hyde doesn't exactly fit well in head coach Kyle Shanahan's system. Joe Williams and Matt Breida could be in for much bigger roles if San Fran lets Hyde walk in free agency, which appears to be the way this will shake out.
