Trae Waynes News
Former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Trae Waynes said on the Geary & Stein Sports Show podcast that his playing days are over. "Honestly, in my head, I'm done. I'm not officially doing it just because I don't give a (expletive)," Waynes said. The 29-year-old former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2015 spent the last two seasons with the Bengals, but he was cut in March. He has played in just five games in the last two seasons due to injuries, and he had a career-low 12 tackles and one pass defensed in five games for Cincy in 2021. If this is indeed the end for Waynes, he'll finish his NFL career with 259 tackles (226 solo), nine tackles for loss, one sack, seven interceptions, 43 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 79 games (57 starts) in six seasons.
The Cincinnati Bengals released cornerback Trae Waynes on Monday. Waynes signed a three-year deal with the Bengals back in 2020, but he has been limited to five games the last two seasons due to pectoral and hamstring injuries. The 29-year-old was originally a first-round pick (11th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015 out of Michigan State. Waynes had just 12 tackles (11 solo) and one pass defensed in four starts in 2021 with Cincinnati. In his six-year NFL career, Waynes has recorded seven interceptions, one sack and 259 tackles (226 solo) over 79 games (57 starts). Assuming he's healthy, the veteran defensive back should latch on with another team.
Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Trae Waynes (hamstring) has been placed on injured reserve and will miss a minimum of three games as a result. Waynes leaves a hole at cornerback, as Eli Apple and Mike Hilton will likely both assume a bigger role on the defense. This leaves Chidobe Awuzie as the No. 1 corner, so an already thin position gets even thinner in Waynes' absence. The Bengals travel to Detroit in Week 6, who luckily have limited weapons at the wide receiver position.
