Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has developed into one of the better pass-catching running backs in the NFL and finished with 58 catches for 476 yards and four touchdowns in 2017. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said Gordon's role in the passing game could expand even more this year, particularly with the loss of tight end Hunter Henry (knee) for the year. "What you're seeing is a player become more comfortable in the offense," former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson said about Gordon. "His role in the offense has evolved, and it's not just rushing the football and picking up the hard yards. It's now becoming an asset in the passing game where you have to be an outlet for Philip." In an offense that should be plenty productive in 2018, Gordon will be one of the primary weapons. He's a solid RB1 choice.
Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco announced Monday that the team plans to pick up running back Melvin Gordon's fifth-year option on his rookie deal. It is a no-brainer after Gordon had his best season as a pro last year, going over 1,000 yards on the ground for the first time in his three years in the league. He also played a full season for the first time while scoring 12 total touchdowns. His 1,581 yards from scrimmage ranked fifth in the NFL. Gordon is scheduled to make $1.9 million in 2018. He will once again be a target at the end of the first round in fantasy drafts as a clear RB1.
Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon (ankle) is active in Week 17 in a must-win game against the Raiders. Gordon was expected to play after getting in two limited practices during the week. He'll be a must-start for fantasy owners, but he could be limited at less than 100 percent and will be at risk of an in-game setback. If Gordon aggravates his high ankle sprain, Branden Oliver would see more work in the backfield with Austin Ekeler (hand) limited to special teams duties.
