Browns Expected To Hire Steve Wilks To Run Defense

The Cleveland Browns are expected to hire former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator, according to sources. They are close on a deal that should be finalized on Monday. Wilks was a disaster in his first and only season as the top man in Arizona, but he was successful coordinating the Panthers defense in 2017 before that. Cleveland's defense is on the rise with key building blocks in cornerback Denzel Ward and defensive end Myles Garrett. Despite allowing plenty of yards per game, the Browns D ranked second in the NFL in turnovers behind only the Bears.

Browns Working On Deal To Hire Steve Wilks

The Cleveland Browns are working on a deal to hire former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks as their next defensive coordinator, according to sources. The Browns have a strong nucleus to work with on that side of the ball, lead by cornerback Denzel Ward and defensive end Myles Garrett. Wilks ran successful defensive units in his time with the Panthers before becoming the lead man in the desert for one season. Cleveland's defense ranked 30th in yards allowed per game (393.0), 25th in passing yards allowed (257.8), 28th in rushing yards allowed (135.2) and 21st in points allowed per game (24.5) in 2018. On the bright side, they were second in the NFL with 31 total takeaways.

Steve Wilks Is One And Done In Arizona

Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks told his staff on Monday that he will no longer be the head coach moving forward, according to sources. Wilks only got one season in the desert, but he did supply the organization with the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft after going 3-13 in 2018. To be fair to Wilks, Arizona's roster was one of the weakest overall in the entire league, so he didn't have much to work with. Rookie quarterback Josh Rosen was dreadful all year as well. The Cardinals have a long way to go to be relevant again, but it'll start by building competent weapons on the offensive line and at the skill positions around Rosen in 2019.
