Chris Blewitt News
After drafting LSU kicker Cade York in the fourth round of this year's draft, the Cleveland Browns released kickers Chase McLaughlin and Chris Blewitt on Monday. McLaughlin was solid early last year for the Browns, but that didn't last and he made only six of his 12 field-goal tries from Week 7 on and wasn't reliable beyond 40 yards. York was the first kicker taken in the draft this year and was considered the top option at his position, so he will immediately serve as Cleveland's starter in his rookie season with McLaughlin and Blewitt out of the picture. York went 15-for-18 on field-goal tries for the Tigers last year, including making five of his seven tries from 50-plus yards. Depending on whether quarterback Deshaun Watson is suspended for the 2022 season, York could have some streaming appeal in fantasy.
The Washington Football Team signed free-agent kicker Joey Slye and released incumbent starter Chris Blewitt in a corresponding move on Tuesday. Slye spent time with the Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers before signing with Washington. The 25-year-old went 11-for-13 in field-goal attempts, including 3-for-3 from 50-yards plus, and a perfect 9-for-9 in extra-point attempts over six games in 2021. Slye can be used as a streamer in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who rank 12th against fantasy kickers this season. In Week 7, Washington released Dustin Hopkins for Blewitt, but the team ultimately decided to swap kickers again in Week 10 and sign Slye. The 26-year-old went 2-for-5 in field-goal attempts over two games before being released by Washington. Blewitt will look to latch onto another team.
Washington Football Team kicker Chris Blewitt has gotten off to a rough start to his NFL career, having three field-goal attempts blocked across his first two games. Despite that, head coach Ron Rivera reiterated Tuesday that Blewitt will remain the team's kicker for the time being, as the team has no plans of bringing in other kickers for tryouts. Washington has the luxury of waiting on a decision during their bye week, although Blewitt's season-long fantasy relevance remains low. Blewitt has not yet attempted a field goal inside of 40 yards this season, with a matchup against a solid Tampa Bay defense on tap in Week 10.
