Trinity Benson News
Detroit Lions wide receiver Trinity Benson (knee) was catching passes on a side field during a mandatory minicamp practice last week. Benson played in just one game last year due to a knee injury and finished on Injured Reserve. He didn't see a single target after catching 10 of his 22 targets for 103 yards in eight games (two starts) in his rookie campaign in 2021. It appears that the 26-year-old wideout is making progress for his injury, but it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to participate once training camp begins at the end of July. Benson is buried on the Lions' receiver depth chart behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, Marvin Jones Jr., Kalif Raymond, Maurice Alexander and rookie Antoine Green.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised wide receiver Trinity Benson during minicamp as one of the players who is "having a hell of a spring." Benson has learned the team's playbook and elevated his confidence by adding speed to his skill set. The 25-year-old will still have to fight for a roster spot in training camp this summer alongside names like Kalif Raymond, Tom Kennedy and rookies Corey Sutton, Kalil Pimpleton and Josh Johnson. The Lions also signed DJ Chark Jr. in free agency and drafted Jameson Williams in the first round, so Benson will most likely be buried on the depth chart if he makes the team. Benson will probably need to stand out on special teams in order to make the 53-man roster.
The Detroit Lions have traded their fifth and seventh-round 2022 picks to the Broncos for wide receiver Trinity Benson. The Lions wide receivers room lacks depth and is largely unproven and the team is taking a chance on the 24-year-old speedster. The haul is pretty steep for an undrafted player who has played the last two seasons on the Broncos practice squad. But Benson has enjoyed a very impressive preseason, including catching four passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos first preseason game. Benson should immediately compete for snaps and also could be used on special teams returning punts.
