Brian Hoyer News
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders parted ways with quarterback Brian Hoyer. The journeyman signal-caller has bounced around the league over the years. He's appeared in 79 regular season games, tossing for 10,899 yards and 53 touchdowns (37 picks) off 59.3% passing. He hasn't done much in the last few seasons, and he finished the 2023-24 campaign by throwing for just 231 yards, along with two picks. At any rate, there could be a market for Hoyer, who has established himself as a quality backup during his career. But even if the 38-year-old finds a new team, that doesn't mean he'll draw attention from managers in fantasy drafts heading into the new season.
Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce said he is not decided on who will start at quarterback on Thursday night against the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers. Rookie Aidan O'Connell could be benched for Jimmy Garoppolo or even veteran Brian Hoyer after he failed to lead the Raiders to any points in the Week 14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A previous report by The Athletic's Vic Tafur suggested it would be likely the Raiders would bench O'Connell if he played poorly this week, but it turns out O'Connell may not even get a chance to play on Thursday at all. O'Connell has been pretty bad the last few weeks and only threw for 171 yards and an interception against Minnesota. The matchup is nice against LA, but whoever is starting under center for the Raiders on Thursday will be no more than a low-end QB2 option for fantasy managers in superflex leagues.
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer completed 17 of 32 passes (53%) for 129 yards and two interceptions in the Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears. Hoyer, filling in for injured Jimmy Garoppolo, struggled to get the offense going at Soldier Field. The veteran quarterback had zero passing touchdowns and was sacked once. Hoyer has now lost 13 straight starts dating back to 2016. The Raiders got down big in this contest and eventually placed rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell in the game. O'Connell threw the only touchdown of the game for the Raiders in the fourth quarter. The Raiders take on the Detroit Lions in Week 8. The Lions have been middling against quarterbacks this season. Hoyer had a bad game, and it will be hard to trust him as a starter if Garoppolo misses more time. Fantasy managers should stay away from Hoyer regardless of the matchup.
