Since releasing quarterback Russell Wilson in March, the Denver Broncos haven't added any other QB behind Jarrett Stidham, so they have a clear need at the position heading into the first round of the NFL draft next Thursday. It's a position that has seen 13 different players make a start since Peyton Manning retired after the Super Bowl-winning 2015 season. The Broncos are open to trading up within the first round to select a rookie signal-caller, but there has to be an actual path to taking a QB that the Broncos think they can drop into their offense in 2024. And it's going to take additional draft capital for the Broncos to move up into the top five, something they don't have much of after using high draft picks to acquire Wilson and head coach Sean Payton. General manager George Paton said "forcing" a pick for a QB could leave the Broncos in a tough situation again next year, but they remain open to all ideas.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton did not report on Monday for the start of voluntary offseason workouts as he seeks a new contract, according to a source. Sutton is going on his 10th starting quarterback in seven seasons in Denver and has only $2 million guaranteed left on his current deal. He had 10 touchdowns in 2023 while ranking 56th in the league in targets (90). The former second-round pick in 2018 out of SMU also had 59 receptions for 772 yards last year, but now that Russell Wilson is in Pittsburgh and the Broncos currently have Jarrett Stidham as their starter under center, Sutton is due for some big regression (mainly in the TD department) in 2024 if he sticks around in Denver. Even with Jerry Jeudy also gone, the 28-year-old Sutton could struggle to come close to another 1,000-yard season with more questions at QB.
The Athletic's Bruce Feldman isn't sold that Oregon quarterback Bo Nix or Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. are the right fit for the Denver Broncos at pick No. 12 overall in this year's NFL draft, which is why he's projecting them to take Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell instead. The speedy cornerback would be a great addition opposite Patrick Surtain in Denver's secondary after posting a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine in February. "He's a phenomenal football player. I'm actually showing a tape of him in our team meeting later this week. His technique, the aggressiveness that he plays with, are things you can study to help your game. He's a very physical player, plays with good anticipation, very good change of direction, good feet, great ball skills," one coach said about Mitchell.
The Denver Broncos signed veteran free-agent center Sam Mustipher to an undisclosed deal on Thursday, according to a source. The 27-year-old spent the 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens after playing the previous three years with the Chicago Bears. He'll be a veteran depth option for the middle of Denver's offensive line in 2024. Mustipher entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame with the Bears. In his four seasons in the NFL, he has started 42 of the 52 contests that he's appeared in. Last year in Baltimore, Mustipher played in only nine regular-season games and started two of them.
The Denver Broncos signed free-agent offensive guard Calvin Throckmorton to an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday, according to the team. Throckmorton played in 15 games (seven starts) with the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers in 2023 before being released by the Panthers last November. The 27-year-old from Oregon entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2021 with the New Orleans Saints. He spent the first two years of his NFL career in New Orleans before playing with the Titans and Panthers last year. Throckmorton will give the Broncos some offensive-line depth in 2024 at the guard position. In his three years in the NFL, Throckmorton has started 27 of the 46 contests that he's appeared in.
