Dirk Koetter News
The Atlanta Falcons hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter as their next offensive coordinator on Tuesday. The 59-year-old went 19-29 in his three seasons as the head coach in Tampa. Their offense ranked first in the league in passing yards per game (320.3), third in yards per game (415.5) and 12th in scoring (24.8 points per game). Koetter was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta from 2012-14, so he's familiar with quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones. The Falcons had a top-10 passing attack each year that Koetter was in Atlanta. With Ryan, Jones and up-and-coming young receiver Calvin Ridley, the Falcons have one of the stronger offensive cores in the league, so Koetter is in a position to thrive.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers relieved head coach Dirk Koetter of his duties on Sunday after their Week 17 loss to the Falcons. Koetter was with the team for three seasons and finished his stint with a 19-29 record after going 5-11 in 2018. Koetter led the Bucs to their first winning season since 2010 when they went 9-7 in his first year in 2016. The ultimate deciding factor was quarterback Jameis Winston not improving in Koetter's time as the head coach, and Tampa's defenses were perennially awful. Winston is expected to return and has solid receivers around him in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, but Tampa will focus on improving their backfield and bolstering their secondary under their new head coach.
