Marcus Cannon News
Houston Texans right tackle Marcus Cannon might not be with his current organization for too much longer. The 33-year-old is heading into his final year of a five-year deal he signed with the New England Patriots in 2016. The veteran tackle was only able to play four games in 2021 before back injuries sidelined him. His release would save the Texans $5.2 million in cap space. This wouldn't be surprising considering Cannon has no guaranteed money left on his deal. Also, the Texans are in the middle of a youth movement, so they don't have much incentive to keep Cannon on the roster. The 10-year veteran should bounce back elsewhere, assuming he's released. He has been fairly productive throughout his professional career.
Houston Texans offensive tackle Marcus Cannon (back), who was placed on Injured Reserve last week, recently underwent back surgery to fix a herniated disc and is now out roughly 12 weeks, according to a source. Cannon is unlikely to return the rest of this season. With Cannon expected to miss the rest of the year, the Texans will likely ask Charlie Heck to serve as the starting left tackle moving forward. It's bad news for rookie quarterback Davis Mills, who could be making his last start in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts with Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) getting closer to a return from Injured Reserve.
Houston Texans offensive tackle Marcus Cannon (knee) recently underwent minor knee surgery following organized team activities, according to a source. Cannon is feeling good, and the scope is unlikely to affect his participation in training camp next month. The 33-year-old had played his entire career with the New England Patriots before being traded to the Texans in March. Cannon, who is a cancer survivor, opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns about COVID-19. He had been a reliable contributor on New England's offensive line in his previous four seasons, though, earning offensive grades of 70 or better in that span. Houston will need Cannon to contribute to help improve their running game and protect quarterback Deshaun Watson, if he sticks around.
