Mitchell Schwartz News
Free-agent offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz announced his retirement from professional football on his Twitter account on Thursday. Mitchell, a first-team All-Pro in 2018 with the Kansas City Chiefs, hadn't played since 2020, when he started six games for KC before suffering a season-ending back injury. The 33-year-old was released after the 2020 season and never latched on with another organization. He was originally a second-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2012 out of Cal, and he played his first four seasons before spending five years with the Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz (back) announced on his Twitter page on Wednesday that he's undergoing back surgery after the injury kept him from playing in the team's Super Bowl run in this year's playoffs. The 31-year-old said the recovery process won't be too long this offseason, so he should be expected to be ready for training camp and the start of the 2021 regular season. He played in just six games in 2020, the first season of his career in which he didn't start all 16 games. Kansas City's offensive line was a patchwork unit in front of quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl without Schwartz and left tackle Eric Fisher, and it was a key to their downfall in the big game.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that right tackle Mitchell Schwartz (back) will not play in the Divisional Round against the Browns. Schwartz played in the first six games of the 2020 season but hasn't played since the Week 6 win over the Bills. While it would've been nice to have the 2018 first-team All-Pro in the lineup this Sunday against the Browns, it shouldn't slow down this high-octane offense all that much. Plus, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle, hip) is ahead of schedule and is expected to suit up this weekend after sitting out the final two regular season games. Kansas City's offense is expected to have their way with a Browns Defense that is particularly vulnerable in the back end.
