Panthers Expected To Sign Bruce Irvin

The Carolina Panthers are expected to sign free-agent defensive end Bruce Irvin to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, a source told NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon. The 31-year-old spent time with the Raiders and Falcons in 2018 and had 6.5 sacks in eight games with each squad. The veteran pass rusher will help fill the void left by Julius Peppers, who announced his retirement in February. Irvin should start across from Mario Addison in Carolina.

Bruce Irvin, Karl Joseph Could Be Traded

Oakland Raiders linebacker Bruce Irvin and safety Karl Joseph are both candidates to be traded ahead of the Oct. 30 deadline, according to sources. Irvin is a coveted pass rusher, but his $8 million base salary this year and $9 million salary for 2019 has turned teams off so far. Joseph is expendable for Oakland because of his inability to stay healthy. Oakland is in full-on rebuild mode in head coach Jon Gruden's first season, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see both Irvin and Joseph dealt. Irvin has six tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in six games this season.

Bruce Irvin Could Rush The Passer More In 2018

Oakland Raiders linebacker Bruce Irvin was asked to drop back in coverage a lot in 2017, but defensive coordinator Paul Guenther plans to have Irvin get back to rushing the passer more. "I knew he was a really gifted rusher," Guenther said. "... Just coming here, I thought his best assets for us was to go forward rather than go backwards. He's done a good job with what we're asking him to do in the base fronts." Irvin was a part-time rusher last year but still had 40 pressures, ranking him 14th among linebackers. The 30-year-old tied his career high with eight sacks last year as a part-time rusher, so he could easily set a new career high if he's allowed to go after the quarterback more. He could be a nice value pick in IDP leagues alongside Khalil Mack in Oakland.
