Johnathan Abram News
The New Orleans Saints re-signed safety Johnathan Abram to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday after re-signing defensive back Ugo Amadi on Tuesday. The Saints lost some depth in their secondary this year by releasing safety Marcus Maye and letting cornerbacks Isaac Yiadom and Lonnie Johnson Jr. to move on in free agency, so keeping both Abram and Amadi allows them to keep some of their depth intact. Abram, a 27-year-old former 27th overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 out of Mississippi State, played in just nine games (three starts) for the Saints last year and had 26 tackles (14 solo), an interception and a forced fumble. He hasn't lived up to his first-round draft stock in his five NFL seasons, mainly because of injuries.
The Green Bay Packers claimed safety Johnathan Abram off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, according to a source. The Raiders waived the former first-rounder on Tuesday, but he'll quickly latch on with a new team. The 26-year-old is a bruiser and a physical presence in the secondary, but failure to succeed in coverage is ultimately what caused him to be cut by the Raiders. He'll likely be eased into his new environment in Green Bay, but Abram could eventually enter the team's starting lineup in the secondary. The Packers have actually allowed the second-fewest passing yards per game (170.6) this year. In eight games in Vegas before getting cut, Abram had 48 tackles (35 solo) and one pass defensed.
In a surprise move, the Las Vegas Raiders released former first-round safety Johnathan Abram on Tuesday, according to a source. The Raiders shopped Abram at the trade deadline last week but found no takers, so he'll head to waivers. The 26-year-old was benched in Week 8 and has played only 52 defensive sacks in the last two games. The Raiders are moving forward with Duron Harmon and Trevon Moehrig as their starting safeties after moving on from Abram. The former 27th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft is a physical presence and plays with his hair on fire, but he just hasn't proven to be good enough in coverage. Abram will surely latch on with another team, but he's obviously off the fantasy radar in IDP leagues for now.
