Alex Mack News
Seven-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack has announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday after 13 seasons. Mack was the 21st overall pick in 2009 by the Cleveland Browns out of California. He played seven seasons with the Browns and was named to three Pro Bowls before joining the Atlanta Falcons from 2016-20 while being named to three more Pro Bowls. Mack earned his final Pro Bowl nod in 2021 while playing 17 games for the San Francisco 49ers. The 36-year-old had been contemplating retirement ever since last season ended, and his contract restructure with the Niners on Thursday was an indication that he was leaning toward hanging up his cleats. Jake Brendel and Dohnovan West are likely to compete for the starting center job with Mack now out of the picture.
San Francisco 49ers center Alex Mack agreed to a restructured contract on Thursday. His base salary will drop from $5 million to $1.12 million this year and $3.35 million to $1.165 million next year, giving the team over $4 million in salary cap space for now. Mack has been considering retirement and may not play out the rest of his current deal with San Francisco. The 49ers will likely be looking for an insurance policy at center in case the 36-year-old decides to hang up his cleats before the start of the 2022 season.
Atlanta Falcons free-agent center Alex Mack is expected to sign with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source. The Cal product will return to the Bay Area. Mack has been with Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland and Atlanta. Coupled with the historic signing of left tackle Trent Williams on Wednesday, San Francisco's offensive line is in extremely good hands with both Williams and Mack in the fold. The 35-year-old Mack is no longer in the prime of his career, but he's a three-time second-team All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler who is familiar with Shanahan's system. The two offensive line signings is a huge boost for the team's running game, which currently has Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. atop the depth chart with Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman both free agents.
