Chris Jones Doesn't Report For OTAs

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones didn't report for the start of organized team activities this week, according to a source. Jones is in the final year of his deal and is looking for a big long-term extension after posting an incredible 15.5 sacks in his third season in the NFL. The 24-year-old also had 6.5 sacks in 2017 and has emerged as one of the best interior defensive line pass rushers in the league. He will be paid handsomely eventually.

Mecole Hardman Impresses Andy Reid

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Mecole Hardman, a second-round pick, impressed head coach Andy Reid during rookie minicamp this weekend. Reid said that Hardman's route running was brutal at first, but the speedster continued to improve each time he ran routes. There's a good possibility that Tyreek Hill is suspended indefinitely by the league or released altogether, so Hardman could be in line for a huge role in his rookie season behind Sammy Watkins. Hardman is also a fine special teams return man, so he'll likely have a role there as well. He'll need to learn Reid's complex system quickly, but he'll have immediate value in redraft leagues. However, don't overvalue him just because he's taking throws from stud quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Jamaal Charles Retires With Chiefs

Running back Jamaal Charles officially retired on Wednesday after 11 professional seasons and signed a one-day contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 32-year-old was a third-round pick in 2008 and spent nine years in KC, becoming the team's all-time leading rusher with 7,260 yards, including five 1,000-yard seasons on the ground. Charles was a two-time All-Pro in 2010 and 2013 and was named to four Pro Bowls. He lost most of his explosiveness when he tore his ACL in 2015, and he bounced around several teams the last couple seasons. It might be a stretch for him to get into the Hall of Fame, but Charles was one of the most effective all-around backs in his heyday.

Derrick Johnson To Retire With Chiefs

Free-agent linebacker Derrick Johnson will sign a one-day contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in order to retire. The 36-year-old was a first-round pick by KC in 2005 and played 13 seasons with the team. He was one of the top overall linebackers in his prime and was selected to four Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro in 2011. Johnson had 27.5 sacks and 14 interceptions in his time with the Chiefs. He played in six games with the Raiders last year before being released.

Chris Jones Not At Workouts

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones isn't present for the team's offseason workout program that started on April 15, according to multiple sources. The 24-year-old is coming off a breakout season in 2018 in which he had 15.5 sacks (third in the NFL), 29 quarterback hurries (fifth in the league) and 40 total tackles. The second-round pick in 2016 is entering a contract year and would like to sign a long-term extension with KC. He's due to make $1.19 million in base salary this year. It would be a surprise if the Chiefs don't eventually reach an extension with Jones, who will be a strong IDP investment this year.
