Derek Stepan News
Ottawa Senators center Derek Stepan (undisclosed) will return from a one-game absence on Sunday against Edmonton, with Filip Chlapik making room in the lineup. Stepan scored in his Senators debut on Jan. 14, but he has since then added just one more point in six outings and now owns a minus-six rating for the season. The veteran center used to be a solid 50-point guy in the league, but the last two seasons haven't been kind for him and there's no light at the tunnel either when he's simply a fourth-liner at his new club. Stepan belongs on the waiver wire unless you're in a super deep league and are in desperate need of a faceoffs guy.
Ottawa Senators center Derek Stepan (undisclosed) won't feature Thursday night against the Canucks. Filip Chlapik will play in his place. Defenseman Christian Wolanin (lower body) is also ruled out and has been placed on the injured reserve. Stepan is rated day-to-day, so he likely won't be missing for long. He's desperately in need of a break as well, after posting a minus-seven rating across his last four games. Chlapik will make his first appearance of the season. He had a decent year in the AHL last season with 22 points in 37 games but failed to impress among the big boys, posting only six points in 31 outings.
Center Derek Stepan was traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick on Saturday evening. The 30-year-old, who spent three full seasons in Arizona, will provide veteran guidance and should fill a top-nine forward role on his new team. With one year remaining on a five-year, $39 million contract ($6.5 mil AAV), Stepan is only owed $2 million over the 2020-2021 season. With his best offensive days likely behind him (recorded just 28 points in 70 games last season), the Minnesota Native only carries fantasy streaming value at this point. However, with an expected uptick in minutes playing on a rebuilding Senators squad, Stepan could be a center to monitor as the season progresses.
