Mackenzie Blackwood News
The San Jose Sharks have placed goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury. The 27-year-old stopped 13 shots before leaving late in the first period of a 7-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. Blackwood began his career with the Devils and enjoyed two productive seasons with them before struggling in each of his last four campaigns. This season, he owns a 3.48 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage across 35 games for San Jose, going just 9-18-3 in that time. The Sharks currently sit second-last in the NHL with a 15-37-5 record, tied with the Chicago Blackhawks in points but leading in points percentage. Their -102 goal differential is by far the worst mark in the league.
San Jose Sharks goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood will make his 29th start of the season Tuesday against Seattle. After beating Anaheim and the Rangers in his most recent appearances, the 27-year-old aims to produce his first three-game winning streak of the season. Blackwood has a 7-17-3 record for the campaign and boasts a 3.63 goals-against average with a .896 save percentage. San Jose tends to struggle most nights, but a matchup against a team ranked only 27th in goals averaged could give Blackwood and the Sharks some joy on Tuesday.
The New Jersey Devils traded goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to San Jose in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick Tuesday. Blackwood had a solid start to his career, compiling a 32-24-8 record with a 2.72 goals-against-average and .916 save percentage across his first two seasons. However, he faced some challenges in the past three years, recording a 33-33-10 record with a 3.19 goals-against-average and an .897 save percentage. As a result, the 26-year-old fell behind netminders Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid on the Devils depth chart. Joining San Jose, Blackwood is expected to share playing time with Kaapo Kahkonen.
New Jersey Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood won't dress for Thursday's matchup against the Blues after taking a shot off the hand during Wednesday's morning skate in Detroit. He's been held out of action as a precaution, so it's possible that Blackwood will be back in action by the weekend. Akira Schmid has been summed from the minors to fill in for Blackwood, although it's currently unclear if it's going to be him or Vitek Vanecek facing St. Louis. The latter would be playing for a second night in a row after beating the Red Wings 5-1 with 32 saves on Wednesday.
