Cal Petersen News
Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Cal Petersen has cleared waivers, paving a path for a demotion to the American Hockey League's Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The 29-year-old started Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins but was shelled for seven goals on 32 shots (.781 save percentage) while taking the loss. It was just the fifth appearance (fourth start) of the season in the NHL for the former Los Angeles Kings netminder as he sports a 3.90 goals-against average and an .864 save percentage, going 2-2-0 in the process. He has posted a 3.26 GAA and .890 Sv% across 15 games with the Phantoms, as well. Once a highly-regarded netminder, Petersen scuffled to a 3.75 GAA and .868 Sv% in 10 games with the Kings last season while spending the majority of the campaign with the AHL's Ontario Reign.
Los Angeles Kings goaltender Calvin Petersen was placed on waivers Wednesday. This is a very surprising move from the team, considering that Petersen has only just started the first season of a three-year deal worth $15 million, but his $5 million cap hit makes it very unlikely that somebody claims him. Petersen earned the nice contact with a couple of strong seasons, but he has had a miserable time in 2022-23 and the move comes after the 28-year-old allowed four goals on 16 shots in a relief effort against Seattle Tuesday night. His record at 5-3-2 isn't too bad, but Petersen has a horrible 3.75 goals-against average and a .868 save percentage. It looks like Petersen could now be set for a stint in the AHL, with the Kings hoping that maybe he rediscovers some of his old form.
Los Angeles Kings goaltender Calvin Petersen is considered day-to-day after he exited Monday's preseason game against Vegas with a lower-body injury. Petersen started the game but left after the opening period. He allowed one goal on 11 shots in an eventual 2-1 overtime victory. Pheonix Copley impressed after taking over from Petersen, saving all 30 shots he faced. Kings head coach Todd McLellan suggested after the game that Petersen was pulled only because it was a preseason game, which is great news for fantasy managers, although him being completely healthy would be even better. The 27-year-old had a strong campaign last year with a 20-14-2 record and he should get his fair share of starts again in 2022-23.
Los Angeles Kings goaltender Calvin Petersen didn't allow anything past him Thursday night against San Jose, leading the team to a 3-0 victory with 29 saves. The 27-year-old bagged his third shutout of the season and will continue the campaign with a 17-9-1 record. The Kings look like a playoff team again and Petersen has played a big part in it with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. Jonathan Quick is having a nice bounce-back year as well and head coach Todd McLellan has confidently rotated his goalies all season. McLellan rarely goes with the same guy between the pipes in two consecutive games, so it seems likely that Quick gets the next one on Saturday against Vegas.
