Jesús Luzardo News
The Miami Marlins activated left-hander Jesus Luzardo (elbow) from the 15-day injured list on Saturday and optioned right-hander Eli Villalobos to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. In his lone minor-league rehab start for Single-A Jupiter, Luzardo tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings with one walk and six strikeouts on May 5. The Marlins will throw the 26-year-old southpaw right back into their starting rotation on Saturday to take on the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Most fantasy managers should be hesitant to do the same with Luzardo and throw him right back into their starting lineups, as the Phillies rank second in baseball with a .762 team OPS, behind only the Dodgers. Luzardo has opened the year 0-2 with a 6.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB in his 26 innings, too.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo (elbow) has rejoined the team and is likely to be reinstated from the injured list on Saturday to start against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. After throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts for Single-A Jupiter on Sunday, Luzardo is all set to return to Miami's rotation following a recovery from tightness in his left elbow. The 26-year-old left-hander will likely take the rotation spot of Edward Cabrera (shoulder), who just went on the injured list earlier in the week. Fantasy managers shouldn't be in a hurry to activate Luzardo for Saturday's rigid assignment against the Phillies, considering the southpaw has struggled to a 6.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 27:13 K:BB through 26 innings (five starts) for the Marlins this season.
Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo (elbow) looked good in a minor-league rehab start for Double-A Jupiter on Sunday, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one on 67 pitches. His fastball averaged 95.1 mph and topped out at 96.4 mph. After the strong showing by Luzardo, it's a good bet that he'll come off the 15-day injured list this week to make a start this weekend in a tough matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 26-year-old southpaw got off to a slow start to begin the year in 2024 with an 0-2 record, 6.58 ERA (5.08 FIP) and 1.42 WHIP with 13 walks and 27 strikeouts in 26 innings over his first five starts. Still, Luzardo should be stashed in the majority of fantasy formats.

Before 2023, Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo hadn't surpassed more than 100 1/3 IP in a season, but last year, the lefty tallied 178 2/3 IP. The former third-round pick notched a career-high in Ks with 208, twelfth-most in the majors, a 1.21 WHIP, 3.55 FIP, and 20.6% K-BB% on his way to collecting 10 wins. Luzardo also posted a top-12 SwStr% (14.1%) and Contact% (70.8%). He went from 6.1% BB% in the first half of 2023 to 9.6% in the second half, but should lower the BB% as he matures and gets used to pitching more innings. Another bugaboo is the long ball. The southpaw allowed an 11.5% HR/FB in 2023. FGDC projections for 2024 have him going 11-10 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 18.8% K-BB%, and 208 K in 181 IP. His NFBC ADP has him going around pick 90, but RotoBaller is very bullish, ranking him at 74. It'd be no surprise to see Luzardo go to his first All-Star game in 2024, and it's no wonder his name is being tossed around as a possible trade target. If he gets an upgrade in environment, it could boost his projected win total, increasing his fantasy value too.
