José Urquidy News
Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (forearm) allowed three runs on three hits while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings in his first minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. Urquidy threw 28 of his 46 pitches for strikes and will make another rehab start this Saturday with Double-A Corpus Christi, where he's expected to throw 70 pitches. "When I finished the game, I didn't feel anything bad," said Urquidy, who was topping out at 90-93 mph. "I wasn't thinking to not put too much stress on my arm, but I think I've got more than that. I think next outing, I'm going to have more velocity for sure." The Mexican hurler went 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA in 16 games (10 starts) in 2023 and spent three months on the injured list with right-shoulder discomfort. Given all the injuries to Houston's rotation early this year, Urquidy figures to have a spot waiting for him when he's healthy enough to return.
Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (forearm) is scheduled to make his first minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. Manager Joe Espada said the plan is for Urquidy to go around four innings or 60 to 65 pitches. Urquidy is finally ready to start pitching in games again after being out since the middle of March in spring training with a right-forearm strain. Given how long the 29-year-old has been out, we should expect him to make multiple rehab outings in the minors before the Astros even consider activating him from the injured list. Urquidy, who missed a large chunk of last season as well due to injury, won't even be guaranteed a starting rotation spot when he's cleared to rejoin the big-league club.
Houston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (forearm) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land this weekend. The right-hander has been sidelined since spring training due to inflammation in his forearm. The expectation is that Urquidy is going to need a few rehab starts before rejoining the Astros rotation. Possibly, Urquidy is able to rejoin the Astros rotation by the end of May. Fantasy managers will have to stay tuned for more updates over the next week or two.

Houston Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy was efficient despite being limited with shoulder discomfort in 2021. He posted an 8-3 record with a 3.62 ERA, 4.01 xERA,0.99 WHIP, 4.14 FIP, and 90 strikeouts over 107 innings. The 26-year-old isn't an elite strikeout pitcher (32nd percentile in K%) but has excellent command, as evidenced by last year's 96th percentile walk rate. He should limit any self-damage by using his four-pitch arsenal, led by his great changeup. The right-hander's lack of durability is concerning, as he's only thrown for 100-plus innings just once in his career. ATC projects Urquidy with a 9-7 record, 10 quality starts, 4.25 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 120 strikeouts over 137 innings in 2022. According to Rotoballer's Expected Draft Values, ATC's projections have Urquidy roughly fair value at his ADP of 214. Urquidy will provide good ratios and is solid SP 4/5 in upcoming fantasy drafts despite the lack of durability.
