Gerrit Cole News
New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow), who played catch on Monday, is scheduled to face live hitters on Tuesday for the first time in his rehab process. Cole is finally moving to facing live hitters after throwing off a mound for the last couple of weeks as he tries to return from nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. The 33-year-old hasn't pitched in a game since early in spring training in March and still has plenty of boxes to check off, but fantasy managers may finally be starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The reigning American League Cy Young winner will eventually have to go on a minor-league rehab assignment, but if he doesn't suffer any setbacks along the way, he could make his 2024 debut before the All-Star break in the middle of July.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) threw a bullpen session on Saturday, and his fastball was clocking in at the low 90s. Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said that Cole is "one notch ahead of your typical spring training progression." This means that the reigning AL Cy Young winner has a chance to face live hitters sometime next week. However, the 33-year-old is still several weeks away from a return, which could be somewhere around the mid-June or early July timetable. Cole should be rostered in all formats and will be inserted at the top of the Yankees rotation when he returns. This will likely send either Luis Gill or Clarke Schmidt to the bullpen if the Yankees opt to continue with a five-man starting rotation. However, both pitchers have performed quite well with a 2.39 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 2.49 ERA,1.13 WHIP, respectively, and could push the Yankees into having a six-man rotation.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) threw "about 36 pitches" in a bullpen session on Tuesday at the team's facility in Tampa, Florida. Manager Aaron Boone said Cole would next return to New York and characterized the outlook for Cole as "just onward and upward." That hopefully means Cole is close to facing live hitters in batting practice, considering he's now tossed several successful bullpen sessions. The 33-year-old six-time All-Star remains firmly on course to return to New York's rotation sometime in mid-June, assuming a minor-league rehab assignment begins in late May. Right-hander Luis Gil has filled in admirably during Cole's absence for the Yankees, boasting a 2.51 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 48:26 K:BB across 43 innings (eight starts) in 2024, and he's gotten himself into must-roster fantasy territory ahead of Saturday's cushy assignment at home versus the last-place Chicago White Sox.

While Gerrit Cole may not be the number one starting pitcher in fantasy, he's still very much an SP1. The AL Cy Young Award winner had statistically his best season as a Yankee. In 209.0 IP (33 starts), Cole had a 15-4 W-L record, 2.63 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 222 Ks. You don't have to look deep for some red flags, however. Cole's 3.60 xFIP and 3.63 SIERA suggest he was lucky to post a sub-3.00 ERA. Cole's 27.0% K% was his lowest since 2017 and his 96.7 MPH average fastball velocity was down from the 97.8 MPH he had in 2022. While regression may be on the cards, Cole's fastball velocity was still in the 90th percentile and K% in the 76th percentile. The saying that the best ability is availability can also be applied here as no starting pitcher has been more available than Cole. Since 2017, Cole has totalled 1,279.2 IP and made 206 starts. Both are the most in MLB. He is also one of only two pitchers to have topped 200.0 IP in each of the last two seasons. Cole is the ideal option to draft early and then build your offense knowing you have rostered the most reliable ace in baseball.
