Joe Musgrove News
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove (triceps) won't be activated from the injured list ahead of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves. Instead, Musgrove is likely to be activated and start against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. The Padres were planning on bringing Musgrove back on Sunday, but a rainout on Saturday pushed back their rotation. Fantasy managers will have to wait a little longer before getting the 31-year-old back on the mound. Musgrove holds a 6.37 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, and a 36/13 K/BB ratio through eight starts this season. Hopefully some time off will help him get back on track.
San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said he thinks that right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) is in "a great spot for Sunday" to return from the injured list to start in Atlanta against the Braves. The skipper said the team will continue to see how Musgrove recovers after playing catch on Friday and throwing a bullpen session the other day. The Padres put the 31-year-old veteran on the injured list on May 5 with right-elbow inflammation, and he's thrown two bullpen sessions already. It looks like he won't be sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment, so fantasy managers would probably be wise to avoid Musgrove in Atlanta against a strong offensive squad, especially since he wasn't pitching all that well before hitting the IL. In 41 innings so far in 2024, Musgrove has an unsightly 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, although he did fan nine hitters in six innings against the Reds his last time out on May 1.
San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) is aiming to return from the 15-day injured list this weekend to start on Sunday in Atlanta against the Braves. Musgrove threw a bullpen session on Monday and was expected to throw another one on Wednesday, and it looks like he's shown enough to convince the Padres that he doesn't need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to the starting rotation. The 31-year-old veteran went on the injured list on May 5 with right-elbow inflammation and was 3-3 with an elevated 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over his eight starts to begin 2024. Although Musgrove looked much better in his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds, fantasy managers will be rolling the dice if they go with him in his first start off the IL on Sunday against the strong offense of the Braves.

After making the All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2022, San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove only made 17 starts in 2023 and was shut down in late July due to a shoulder injury. The 31-year-old also dealt with a toe injury. The good news is that despite his injury-plagued season, Musgrove was basically the same pitcher he was in his first two years in San Diego. He went 10-3 with a 3.05 ERA (3.52 FIP), 1.14 WHIP, 21 walks and 97 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings pitched. He was working his way back late in the year, but when the Padres were eliminated from playoff contention, the Padres decided to shut him down entirely and let him get an early start on rehabbing in the offseason. Musgrove is one of just five starting pitchers in the big leagues that has had an ERA below 3.20 in each of the last three seasons, and he's also had double-digit wins in each of the last three seasons despite making only 17 starts last year. Musgrave has most likely reached his peak in terms of statistical performance, but when he's healthy, he's a low-risk starter for fantasy managers in a friendly pitcher's park at Petco. Heading into the 2024 season, though, he'll carry more risk because of his shoulder injury and should be considered a solid No. 3 fantasy starter. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 32 starting pitcher, while ATS projects Musgrove to break his streak of ERAs lower than 3.20 with a 3.62 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 162 innings pitched.
