Byron Buxton News
The Minnesota Twins reinstated outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) from the 15-day injured list on Saturday and optioned utility man Austin Martin to Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move. It remains to be seen if Buxton will immediately return to the team's starting lineup on Saturday in Cleveland against the Guardians, but the Twins will be happy to have him back regardless. The 30-year-old oft-injured outfielder went on the shelf with right-knee inflammation in the same knee he's already had surgery on twice, and he went hitless in six at-bats on his two-game minor-league rehab assignment. Expect the Twins to ease Buxton back in at center field and potentially as the designated hitter. He was slashing .250/.300/.391 with a homer and 11 RBI in 92 at-bats before his injury. Manuel Margot and Willi Castro are likely to be the biggest losers in terms of playing time with Buxton back in the fold.
Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) will play another minor-league rehab game with Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday, and if all goes well, he'll be back from the injured list to rejoin the Twins on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. Buxton went 0-for-3 while playing seven innings in center field on Wednesday in his first rehab game with St. Paul and should be cleared to return to the big leagues if he gets through one more game with the Saints on Thursday. The 30-year-old oft-injured outfielder has already had surgery on the same knee twice and has been sidelined with right-knee inflammation since early May. Fantasy managers should expect the Twins to ease Buxton back into the fold when he returns, but if his knee cooperates, he'll eventually return to starting duties in center field.
Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) will test out his knee on Tuesday in front of the team, and if all goes well, he will play in some minor-league rehab games before returning to the Twins. Given the fact that Buxton has had surgery on his knee two different times, it makes sense for the Twins to test him on a minor-league assignment before activating him from the injured list. The 30-year-old has teased fantasy baseball managers with his power/speed combination for years but has coupled that with an inability to stay on the field because of injuries. Buxton was an All-Star in 2022 but has played in 100-plus games in a season just once since 2015 and doesn't run like he did earlier in his career. Until Buxton is able to get past his knee injury, Willi Castro should continue to benefit from extra playing time in center field in Minnesota.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton has long been one of the most frustrating players in fantasy baseball. Loaded with athleticism and god-given talent, the 30-year-old has shown flashes of a mouth-watering power and speed combination in his nine seasons in the big leagues. Of course, the problem is he has appeared in more than 92 games in just one of them. He slugged 19 home runs and stole nine bases in just 85 games in the 2023 season but also struck out in 31.4% of his plate appearances. Perhaps most notably, he didn't spend a single inning in the outfield in that time, something that is set to change this season as he is set for the bulk of reps in center field for the Twins in 2024. That is a scary notion for a player littered with a lengthy injury history. ATC is projecting just 106 games from Buxton in 2024, but also with 25 homers and 11 stolen bags. That could be good enough, of course, as long as he stays healthy that long.
