Jack Leiter News
Texas Rangers rookie starting pitcher Jack Leiter picked up the loss in Tuesday night's 7-4 defeat versus the Cleveland Guardians. Leiter finished the contest, allowing six runs in only 1 2/3 innings pitched. In three starts to begin his big league career, Leiter has been abysmal, with his ERA sitting at 16.39 while failing to make it past the fourth inning in any of his matchups. The young right-hander was only up for a spot start filling in for Nathan Eovaldi (groin). Even if it wasn't just a spot start, it's hard to imagine he would get another turn in the rotation after his performance on Tuesday night. Leiter is currently not scheduled for another start in the majors, and the announcement of his demotion back to Triple-A Round Rock should be coming soon.
Texas Rangers rookie pitcher Jack Leiter is scheduled to start at home against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. Despite struggling in his first two major league starts, it appears the Rangers will give Leiter another chance to prove himself on the mound. The right-hander gave up seven earned runs on eight hits in his first start against the Detroit Tigers on April 18 and then allowed four earned runs (six runs) across four innings against the Oakland A's on May 8. It's been sort of a rough go for the Rangers' No. 6 prospect to begin his MLB career, so he should only be started in extremely deep formats on Tuesday.
Texas Rangers pitching prospect Jack Leiter was sent back to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday after making his second major-league start in Game 2 of the team's doubleheader against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. The 24-year-old right-hander from Vanderbilt got rocked for the second straight time in a spot start, giving up six runs (four earned) in just four innings of work against the suddenly explosive A's offense. The team's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, looks a bit overmatched at the big-league level right now, so he'll go back to the farm to work on things as he waits for his next call-up. With Texas' starting rotation banged up right now, Leiter's next MLB chance could come sooner than later. The good news is that the former second overall pick has looked better at Round Rock, posting a 2.84 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with eight walks and 37 K's in 25 1/3 innings.
