Luis Campusano News
San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano is taking the day off for the series opener on Friday in Atlanta against the Braves. With Campusano taking a day to rest, Kyle Higashioka will do the catching for right-handed knuckleballer Matt Waldron while hitting ninth against Braves left-hander Max Fried. The 25-year-old Campusano has been solid for the Padres in his first full season as their primary catcher. Through his first 40 games in 2024, he's hitting .267 (36-for-135) with three home runs, 24 RBI and 18 runs scored in 144 plate appearances. He'll almost certainly be back behind the plate for the second game of the series on Saturday. Higashioka isn't much of a hitter and should be avoided in DFS formats. The former Yankee backstop has gone 6-for-33 with a homer and two RBI so far this year.
San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano will take a seat Saturday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kyle Higashioka will start behind the plate for the Friars and will catch knuckleballer Matt Waldron. Campusano is hitting .283 with three home runs, 23 RBI and 17 runs scored. This looks to be a standard day off for Campusano in the second game of the series. Higashioka is hitting just .194 (6-for-31) on the year with a homer and two RBI and will be a catching option to avoid in DFS in the nine-hold for the Padres against Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander James Paxton.
San Diego Padres backstop Luis Campusano will be on the bench on Sunday as the Padres hope to avoid a three-game sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 25-year-old has made three consecutive starts and has posted an overall .286/.316/.396 line. Campusano currently holds an excellent 10.5% K rate, placing him in the top 97th percentile among qualified hitters. Kyle Higashioka will slot in behind the dish today and will face Taijuan Walker, who will make his season debut. Higashioka is a desperation play in DFS as he is riding a .190/.190/.381 line with just one RBI. Campusano should be expected to return to the lineup as the Padres open a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

After missing almost the entire first half of the 2023 season, Luis Campusano announced himself as a fantasy viable catcher in the second half. In 49 games across the season, he hit .319/.356/.491 with seven homers, 30 RBI, 27 runs and no stolen bases. While his batting average doesn't appear to be sustainable over an entire season, it is worth noting Campusano had a .305 xBA (expected batting average). And that was his main attribute in the Minor Leagues. In 167 Triple-A games, Campusano had a .297/.366/.513 slash line with 30 homers. Across all Minor League levels, Campusano hit .300/.369/.473 (387 games). Thinking he can put up a ~.280 batting average in a Major League season is hardly a stretch. That is not something you will get from the position outside the top-tier catchers. Only three catchers with at least 350 plate appearances last year had a batting average better than .280. His Minor League numbers and seven homers in 49 MLB games suggest Campusano can hit 20 homers in a full season too. Campusano is generally undrafted in one-catcher leagues but makes an ideal late-round option. He's a lock in two-catcher leagues and can become a top-10 catcher in 2024.
