Miguel Vargas News
Los Angeles Dodgers infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 24-year-old is hitting the cover off the ball in the minors. Right now, Vargas is slashing .295/.437/.583 with eight homers, 38 RBI in Triple-A. Vargas has been playing almost exclusively in left field during this time in Triple-A. It's uncertain if the team plans to keep Vargas in the outfield or move him back into the infield. It's worth noting that outfielder Jason Heyward (back) is expected to be activated from the injured list soon. It'll be interesting to see how the Dodgers work Vargas into the lineup. Vargas has notoriously been great in the minors but struggled once he gets called up to the MLB. We'll see if this time is going to be different.
The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned second baseman/outfielder Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday. Vargas is currently in South Korea with the team but won't be active in the Seoul Series against the San Diego Padres. Vargas was not likely to claim a starting position with Los Angeles this season after being moved from second base into the outfield, pitting him up against the newly acquired Teoscar Hernandez in left field. The 24-year-old had not been performing well in spring training, hitting for just a .192 batting average and a .661 OPS in 26 at-bats. Vargas' impact was expected to be minimal for fantasy managers, and he'll need a lot to go right to make an impact on a major league roster this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Vargas, who was the team's starting second baseman on Opening Day last year, has come to spring training this year as a left fielder. It remains to be seen if Vargas will actually make the permanent switch to the outfield moving forward. What is clear, though, is that Vargas won't be in line for a starting spot anywhere on the diamond for the Dodgers to open the 2024 season. In left field, new acquisition Teoscar Hernandez will be LA's regular left fielder. The 24-year-old Vargas will really have to impress this spring to avoid starting the year at Triple-A Oklahoma City. In 81 games for the Blue in 2023, the Cuban hit a weak .195/.305/.367 with seven home runs, 32 RBI, three steals and 36 runs scored in 304 trips to the plate. He can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Miguel Vargas had himself a very good 2022 season at Triple-A and Dodgers GM, Andrew Friedman has publicly stated that Vargas could begin the year as the team's starting second baseman. Vargas will need to have a good Spring and then still hold down the position if he does break camp but if we look at what he did last year, there's optimism he can do just that. In 113 games, Vargas had 17 homers, 82 RBI, 100 runs and 16 steals while hitting .304/.404/.511. What stands out the most for Vargas is the 14.6% BB% and 13.7% K% he put up last year. Vargas did get called up to the Dodgers last season and hit just .170/.200/.255 in 50 plate appearances but that taster of the Majors should hold him in good stead for whenever he does get the call again. The upside is a 20/20 hitter but it's unlikely we'll see that in 2023 from Vargas as a rookie and in most formats, he'll only be first base eligible when you draft so you'll need to wait for that second base eligibility. But with an ADP of ~278, even with some growing pains, Vargas has the talent to provide fantasy value across the board in 2023. How much value will depend on if he does break camp with the Dodgers.
