Paul Skenes News
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes made his second career start against the Chicago Cubs. His debut last week was a bit underwhelming, but Skenes made easy work of the Cubs lineup this time around. The right-hander struck out the first six batters he faced to begin the game. Skenes would punch out a total of 11 batters over six innings of no-hit baseball on Friday. The Pirates didn't want to push anything, so they did pull Skenes out of the game instead of letting him go for the no-hitter. The Cubs would eventually score off the bullpen, but the Pirates still took the game 9-3. Skenes is everything as advertised and is looking like an elite fantasy option.
Pittsburgh Pirates rookie phenom Paul Skenes allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven across four innings in Saturday's 10-9 win over the Chicago Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. The 21-year-old threw 84 pitches, landing 54 for strikes. He did get into some trouble in the second inning by loading the bases but was able to escape the jam by retiring the next two batters he faced. The early jam brought his pitch count up, which prompted Pirates manager Derek Shelton for the fifth-inning removal. Skenes was electric in his debut, hitting 100 mph or more 17 times per MLB Pipeline. Skenes is here to stay and should be a crucial part of Pittsburgh's starting rotation. The rookie phenom's next scheduled start will be Friday against the Cubs.
Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes, the top prospect in all of baseball after going first overall in last year's draft out of LSU, will finally make his major-league debut this Saturday at PNC Park against the visiting Chicago Cubs. The 21-year-old really didn't have anything left to prove at Triple-A Indianapolis after posting a 0.99 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with eight walks and 45 strikeouts in just 27 1/3 innings over seven starts, but the Pirates were intent on getting him properly built up for his eventual promotion to the big leagues. Skenes might not be as dominant right away in the majors for Pittsburgh, but he should at least be immediately serviceable in all fantasy formats because of his strikeout upside. He has been considered the best pitching prospect in baseball since Stephen Strasburg. Pick Skenes up ASAP if he's somehow available on your waiver wire.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher prospect Paul Skenes is the new top prospect for pitchers by MLB.com. After going first overall in the 2023 draft, there were talks of Skenes making a push for the majors last season. That never came to pass, however, and the big righty will now look to leave Spring Training as a member of the Pirates' 26-man roster. The 6'6" flamethrower has an 80-rated fastball, a slider that comes in rated at 70, and good enough control to use those weapons against any hitter. Skenes is a dynasty darling and should be drafted in most redraft leagues as well. If your draft occurs before word comes out where Skenes will start the season, he is worth the stash. He currently has a 266.7 ADP but that can jump up quickly if the Pirates announce him making the club. Skenes may use the spring to work on a third pitch, his changeup, so don't be discouraged if he has a rough start. He is head and shoulders above other minor league pitchers at this point and can help fantasy managers as soon as he takes the hill in the majors.
