Seiya Suzuki News
Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki is being rested on Friday and will start Friday's series opener against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on the bench. It appears to be a regular day of rest for Suzuki, who recently came back from a stint on the injured list due to an oblique injury. The 29-year-old has gone just 6-for-26 since coming back, but he was able to go deep in the team's last game on Wednesday against the Braves. Even after the rough stretch at the plate in May, the Japanese outfielder is still slashing a strong .282/.344/.482 with four home runs, 15 RBI and 16 runs scored in 85 at-bats for the Cubbies in 2024. Suzuki is a must-start in fantasy when he's in the lineup. With Suzuki out, Cody Bellinger is in right field and is batting second, while rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong will start in center field and bat eighth against Pirates rookie right-hander Paul Skenes.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki went yard in Wednesday's win over the Atlanta Braves on the road, adding a double in the victory. Suzuki's homer came as an insurance run in the eighth inning off Braves right-hander Jesse Chavez, traveling 433 feet to deep center. It's been a great first quarter of the year for the 29-year-old slugger, who's slashing .280/.337/.488 with four big flies, 15 RBI, 15 runs scored, and one stolen base across 92 plate appearances (20 games) as Chicago's everyday right fielder. A four-game series with the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates is on deck starting on Thursday. Over 15 games versus the Pirates since 2023, Suzuki is hitting .323 with one tater, seven doubles, 12 RBI, and 12 runs scored and will be a set-and-forget fantasy option.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki (oblique) has been activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has been out since mid-April due to an oblique issue. Suzuki is not in the Cubs' lineup on Friday after appearing in two straight rehab games. This appears to be a travel day or rest day for Suzuki, so the expectation is that he'll play on Saturday. In the meantime, Mike Tauchman will cover right field and bat second versus right-hander Jared Jones on Friday.

Seiya Suzuki entered the 2022 season as an unknown and immediately raised expectations with a sterling April (.279/.405/.529 with four homers), but his final line of .262/.336/.433 with 14 HR in 446 PAs was something of a disappointment. His plate discipline wasn't great with a 24.7 K% and 9.4 BB%, but the underlying 25.6% chase rate and 8 SwStr% suggest better things to come. Suzuki also did a good job elevating the baseball with a 40 FB%, but his 92.5 mph average airborne exit velocity was only league average. Again, others metrics such as his 11% rate of Brls/BBE and 111.3 mph max exit velocity suggest more pop in his bat. Perhaps his persistent finger injury prevented him from tapping into his power? Suzuki currently projects to hit second in the Cubs lineup, but Chicago's lineup could change considerably before Opening Day. Suzuki is a good athlete with a 28.3 ft./sec Statcast Sprint speed, but going 9-for-14 on the bases last season (64% success rate) will probably earn him a red light. Suzuki offers plenty of upside at his ADP of 125.47, but his .247 xBA and inability to translate his peripherals into fantasy production present plenty of risks as well.
