Yordan Alvarez News
Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez is getting a day off on Friday in the series opener in Milwaukee against the Brewers. With Alvarez out, Yainer Diaz will serve as the team's designated hitter and will bat fifth against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta. Alvarez has been disappointing by his standards and has gone just 13-for-56 (.232) with one home run, two RBI and 15 strikeouts in 62 plate appearances in the first 15 games in the month of May. We'd expect the 26-year-old left-handed slugger to turn things around sooner than later at the plate, and he'll get a day off to clear his head on Friday. Diaz, 25, makes for a decent DFS play in the five-hole against a pitcher he's never faced in his career. In 159 at-bats so far in 2024, Diaz is slashing .270/.302/.390 with three home runs and 21 RBI for the 'Stros.
Houston Astros designated hitter/outfielder Yordan Alvarez continued his slump at the dish on Thursday, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in an 8-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Alvarez is now 0-for-17 with seven strikeouts and zero walks in his last four games. Fortunately for the 26-year-old, the Astros have won three of those games anyway. Alvarez is down to a .244/.312/.439 triple-slash line to go with 18 runs, 18 RBI, and a modest seven homers. They aren't terrible numbers by any means, but they certainly aren't what fantasy managers were hoping for when they drafted the slugger with a top-20 pick in most cases. Alvarez will likely turn things around and end up being one of the best four-category contributors in fantasy, but this stretch is frustrating nonetheless.
Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez had another solid game at the plate in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Royals. Alvarez went 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, and two RBI. The 26-year-old has picked things up after stumbling early and is now slashing .347/.407/.653 with four home runs, nine runs scored, and 11 RBI in 54 plate appearances. He is on pace to deliver top-tier fantasy production once again.

Look at Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez's numbers from the 2023 season (31 home runs, 97 RBIs, and 77 runs), and fantasy managers might think, "That's a very good season!" And it was, except for one thing: it was two-thirds of a season. Alvarez missed 48 games due to various injuries last year and still managed almost to produce a 30-100 campaign while slashing .293/.407/.583. Only seven players slashed at least .290/.400/.500 last season, and Alvarez's 170 wRC+ was second to just Shohei Ohtani. The injuries are less of a concern when you realize Alvarez averaged 140 games played in 2021-2022, and he is just 27 years old. Alvarez somehow dropped in barrel rate and hard-hit rate compared to 2022, likely due to injuries. If he puts those behind him and reaches that same power level from 2022 (.672 expected slugging percentage), this is one of a few players with a legitimate 50-home run upside in 2024. ATC projects Alvarez to smash 39 homers and drive in 108 runs over 599 plate appearances in 2024. Currently going in the middle of the second round in drafts, he is a top target if steals or starting pitching is already locked down with the first pick.
