Tua Tagovailoa News
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has skipped most of the team's voluntary organized team activities in the past month as the team prepares for him to play on his fifth-year option in 2024, according to sources close to the situation. In his first four years in the league, Tagovailoa was present for most of the voluntary work. Sources think his absence is related to his contract status. The fifth overall pick in 2020 is currently set to make $23.171 million on his fifth-year option, but he's hoped for a long-term contract extension, especially after playing all 17 regular-season games in 2023 while throwing for a career-high 4,624 yards. He made the Pro Bowl for the first time and started in his first playoff game, although his 14 interceptions were tied for fourth-most in the NFL. It's unlikely that Tagovailoa will conduct a full-fledged holdout this summer. Contract issues aside, Tagovailoa is in the QB1 ranks in fantasy, but his ceiling isn't as high as the elite names because of his lack of rushing.
NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe threw cold water on the idea that the Miami Dolphins could take a quarterback in Round 1 of the upcoming NFL draft. Instead, Wolfe thinks the team will go after either an offensive or defensive lineman at pick No. 21 overall. Wolfe said he'd "be shocked" if the Dolphins took a signal-caller in the first or second round this year. In addition to their offensive and defensive-line needs, the Dolphins could also use help at tight end. Don't forget that the Dolphins have only two picks in the top 150 this year, so spending a luxury pick on a QB seems like a reach if they plan on eventually extending Tagovailoa for the long term. Although nothing is official with an extension for Tagovailoa yet, all signs point to him staying in Miami long-term, so it would make sense for the Dolphins to hone in on more protection for him early in this year's draft.
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa reiterated that he will not hold out as he looks for a long-term contract extension and plans on attending voluntary organized team activities this spring. The Dolphins are saying that they prefer to extend Tagovailoa, but as things stand now, the 26-year-old former first-rounder is set to play the 2024 season on the fifth-year option from his rookie deal. Despite leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards while throwing a career-high 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2023 in his fourth year in the league, Tagovailoa was only the QB9 at the end of the year in fantasy points because of his lack of rushing at the position. As long as he has receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to throw to, Tagovailoa will be on the midrange to low-end QB1 map, but his overall upside is lacking.
