Jeremy Peña News
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and his first stolen base of the season in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the division-rival Texas Rangers. The 26-year-old Dominican infielder is off to a strong start in his third big-league season with the Astros, going 12-for-36 (.333) with two home runs, a double, six RBI, the one stolen base and four runs scored in 38 plate appearances over his first 10 contests. Last year was a disappointment for Pena in the power department with just 10 long balls after he slugged 22 round-trippers with 63 RBI in 136 regular-season games in his rookie campaign in 2022. He's stole 24 bags in his first two seasons but could easily set a career-high in that category in 2024 if he continues to get the green light on the basepaths.
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 8-0 romp over the Blue Jays. It was the 26-year-old's fourth multi-hit performance in seven games, and he's now 10-for-25 (.400) to begin the year, with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored. While the former World Series MVP saw a dip in power last season after belting 22 home runs in 2022, he reduced his K% by increasing his contact rate and his BB% in 2023. Pena was working on some swing adjustments in the preseason to regain some power and it looks to be paying off. If he can continue to hit for both power and average, he'll prove to be a late-round value after going off of 2024 fantasy draft boards around pick 224.
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena showcased a more efficient batting stance in Monday's live batting practice, per the Athletic's Chandler Rome. The changes include less pre-pitch bat movement and a more subtle front-leg load. Manager Joe Espada expressed his pleasure in Pena's changes, saying he is "hitting the ball in the air more with power". Power was an issue for the 26-year-old last season, as he slashed .263/.324/.381 with 10 home runs, 81 runs scored, 52 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. The batting average improvements were welcome and Pena showed he could hit for some power in his rookie season when he hit 22 HR. His fantasy value could take an uptick in 2024 if he can maintain his BA gains while also adjusting to hit for more power.

From a power perspective, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena's 2023 was a disappointment. In 2022, the rookie belted 22 home runs and had an above-average ISO of .173 in 521 at-bats, but in 2023 the HR total dipped to just 10 and the ISO went to a below-average .118 with 577 ABs. There were some encouraging signs in 2023 nonetheless, because with his 2022 power came a lot of swing-and-miss. In 2023, the former World Series MVP saw his K% drop from 24.2% to 20.3% (22.7% league avg.) while Contact%, SwStr%, and O-Swing% all improved as well. Also, even though his walk rate remained below average, it rose 74% (on a relative basis) from 3.9% to 6.8%. Additionally, despite seeing his Barrel% drop to 4.0%, his average EV and Sweet-Spot% remained unchanged, so there is hope he can at least land somewhere in the middle power-wise while continuing to improve elsewhere. ATC projections forecast a .261-15-63-74-13 line with a .310 WOBA and 97 wRC+. With an NFBC ADP that stands at 226 overall, Pena won't cost managers much, and there's enough upside to take him earlier, near his RotoBaller rank of 202 overall.
