Sam LaPorta 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Lions Potent Offense Adds Another Talented Pass Catcher
Over the last few years, the University of Iowa has started to be known as TE University, and rightfully so. With San Francisco tight end George Kittle, Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, and Seattle Seahawks tight end Noah Fant coming out of the school in recent years, it's hard not to get excited about Detroit Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta. Kittle has already praised LaPorta's overall ability and believes he'll thrive in the NFL. Although he has displayed dominant pass-catching in college, he must improve as a run and pass blocker to succeed at the next level. Thankfully, he finds himself in an ideal situation, being selected by the Detroit Lions with the third pick of the second round (34th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Lions have one of the best offensive lines in the game and a relatively concentrated passing game. Outside Amon-Ra St. Brown, LaPorta will have to compete for targets in Detroit's passing game with Josh Reynolds, Marvin Jones, and Jameson Williams once he completes his six-game suspension. LaPorta was impressive during rookie camp, and his versatility stood out. According to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic, the Lions used him as an in-line tight end and flexed him out to receiver during rookie camp, which he did routinely at Iowa. Despite being the second TE off the board in this draft, he might have the clearest path to fantasy production in his rookie season. He is an exciting grab in dynasty formats and worth a late-round flier in redraft leagues.

Travis Kelce 2023 Player Outlook: Full Speed Ahead At Age 33
Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce owns many records among tight ends in NFL history. Some of them are 71.8 receiving yards per game average (1st), 7 seasons with 1k-plus yards (1st), and 35 games with 100+ yards (1st). While the Chiefs drafted Rashee Rice in Round 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, there is no viable threat to Kelce regarding being the alpha in the KC passing game for 2023. He averaged 12.2 YPC in 2022 and hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. Given Kelce's elite talent and relatively minimal injury history, we should expect him to age more gracefully than other players. Even at age 33, it doesn't seem logical to fade a first-ballot HOF player attached to arguably the best QB in football in Patrick Mahomes. In PPR - TE premium formats, Kelce provides a nearly insurmountable advantage based on past production.

Trey McBride: Poised To Be A Top 2 Target in Arizona?
The Arizona Cardinals selected TE Trey McBride at No. 55 overall as the first TE off the board in the 2022 NFL Draft. He wrapped up his rookie campaign with a modest 29 receptions for 265 yards and 1 TD. Incumbent tight end Zach Ertz is still on the roster, but he suffered a torn ACL/MCL in Week 10 and will turn 33 this season. With Arizona likely headed for a complete rebuild, there is a good chance Ertz isn't even on their roster in Week 1. With Hollywood Brown as the only established target on the Cardinals' offense, there is a path for McBride to see plenty of targets in 2023. While the Las Vegas Sportsbooks aren't expecting much from Arizona wins-wise this season, the volume could be there. McBride is currently free in redraft and best-ball leagues and could provide some fantasy upside.

Mark Andrews 2023 Outlook: More Target Competition But More Overall Volume
Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is right in the mix for the second-best tight end in the NFL behind Travis Kelce. He has a 1,361-yard season on his resume and three other seasons of at least 700 yards receiving -- all in a run-first Ravens' offense. However, it appears Baltimore's offense will see a philosophy change under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken, meaning more overall passing attempts for Lamar Jackson. Andrews will have his stiffest competition for targets in 2023 with Odell Beckham Jr. Rashod Bateman, and Zay Flowers in the mix, but the increase in volume should make up for the potential target share regression. There's also a real chance Andrews is still the bonafide No. 1 option for Jackson and the team should be expected to have one of the highest-scoring offenses in 2023. At worst, he'll be a top-three option for Jackson, but his top target in the red zone. Ultimately, he has a mid-level TE1 floor and TE1 overall ceiling after a few seasons of high-upside play at the scarce position for fantasy production.

George Kittle 2023 NFL Player Outlook- Elite Talent, Mediocre Production
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is arguably the best all-around tight end in the game. He is deadly up the seam, catches everything, and runs with power and violence after the catch. He is also a tremendous blocker in the run game, which, unfortunately, is kryptonite for him in fantasy football. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is a wizard play-caller and runs an extremely run-heavy offense. The run game is an outside zone scheme that requires the blockers to move laterally in unison to open gaping cut-back lanes for the ball carrier, and Kittle's power, coupled with his elite athleticism, make him a devastating weapon as an extension of the offensive line. The problem for us fantasy managers is that blocking does not produce fantasy points. Kittle's heavy usage in the run game makes his TE1 fantasy performances completely unpredictable. In 2022, he finished as the TE3 overall and TE2 in PPR points per game, but don't be fooled; the devil is in the details. He failed to reach 40 receiving yards in eight games, and he caught five passes or more in only four games. Fantasy success is strongly correlated to opportunity, and Kittle only had four games with more than six targets. The result of his inconsistency in the passing game was seven games with under 10 PPR points and six games under seven PPR points, four of which came in the final five games of the regular fantasy season when managers needed to make a playoff push. His successful fantasy finish was mainly due to his 11 touchdowns, which nearly doubled his career high at that point, but as we know, touchdowns are flukey and one of the least sticky stats from year to year. Kittle also has injury concerns, missing at least two games every season since 2019. There is some hope that he can regain his status as one of fantasy's elites at the tight end position, but it would likely require Brock Purdy to start since Kittle's numbers skyrocketed under him in the last quarter of the NFL regular season, where he caught seven touchdowns from Weeks 15-18. Kittle has the talent to be the TE1 any given week, but his volatility throughout the season is concerning, and he should not be drafted higher than the TE5 at the earliest.
