The Arizona Cardinals have chosen not to pick up defensive end Zaven Collins' fifth-year option, according to general manager Monti Ossenfort. With the move, Collins will be in the final year of his rookie deal in 2024 and will become a free agent next March. It's a surprising move after the 24-year-old former 16th overall pick has recorded 166 tackles (103 solo), 5.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, 10 QB hits, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 12 passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 50 games (39 starts) in his three years in the NFL. Collins isn't exactly on the IDP fantasy radar as a defensive lineman because of his lack of sacks, but he should continue to be a starting edge defender for Arizona in 2024.
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy took third-team reps during Tuesday's OTAs, according to Vikings reporter Andrew Krammer. Sam Darnold is operating as the starter for now, while veteran Nick Mullens is in the QB2 role. McCarthy, the team's No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 Draft, is viewed as the quarterback of the future, but there's a good chance he's eased along slowly given his youth. The National Championship-winning signal-caller turned 21 years old just four months ago, and he only attempted 713 total passes in three years in Michigan's run-heavy offense. Darnold has early-season appeal in deep Superflex or 2QB setups, while McCarthy is more of a dynasty league asset for the time being. The Vikings have a Week 6 bye in 2024, so Week 7 could be a potential target date for McCarthy's first taste of regular season action.
Tennessee Titans defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat (undisclosed) is reportedly rehabbing an injury at the start of OTAs, but head coach Brian Callahan didn't offer any specifics. Sweat was selected with the No. 38 overall pick by Tennessee out of the University of Texas and is expected to be a Day 1 starter next to All-Pro Jeffery Simmons. The 22-year-old was named a unanimous All-American in his final season at Texas, and he won the Outland Trophy for the nation's most outstanding interior lineman. The 366-pounder has elite run-stopping upside in the NFL, so hopefully, his early-career injury won't slow down his development.
Free-agent wide receiver Matt Landers has signed with the Cleveland Browns, the team announced on Tuesday. Landers went undrafted in the class of 2023 last year after two seasons at Georgia, one season at Toledo, and one season at Arkansas. The 24-year-old failed to make an impact at Georgia but racked up 47 receptions for 901 yards and eight touchdowns in his senior season for the Razorbacks. At 6'4", Landers has sub-4.4 speed and solid burst, but he could not stick on the Seattle Seahawks or Carolina Panthers' roster last season. He's likely a longshot to make Cleveland's roster, but the team continues to collect wide receiver flyers in hopes of finding an adequate WR2 behind Amari Cooper.
Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson (ankle) will be limited throughout the team's organized team activities while dealing with an ankle injury. However, he's expected to be ready to go for training camp, which begins in late July. At this point in the offseason, organizations are careful with minor bumps and bruises, so his injury should not affect his fantasy football value -- barring a setback. After being the highest running back drafted since Saquon Barkley in 2018, Robinson enjoyed a solid rookie campaign. He rushed 214 times for 976 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 58 receptions for 487 yards and four more scores. Fantasy managers are expecting him to take the next step in 2024 with quarterback Kirk Cousins running the Atlanta offense, so he's a consensus first-round pick in all formats.
New England Patriots starting offensive guard Cole Strange (knee), who is still dealing with a significant knee injury that he suffered late last year, is expected to miss the start of the 2024 regular season and may be out until the middle of 2024, according to sources. Strange has started every game he's played in New England since he was the 29th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Chattanooga, so it would be a pretty big loss for New England's offensive line in new head coach Jerod Mayo's first year at the helm. The 25-year-old initially injured his knee in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs and is currently being labeled as month-to-month by the organization.
Former Green Bay Packers All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee), who is recovering from knee surgeries, had a positive follow-up exam with expert Dr. Brian Cole, who proclaimed Bakhtiari on schedule for a 2024 return. Cole is the chairman of Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and chairman of surgery at Oak Park Hospital. The 32-year-old veteran left tackle is currently a free agent after the Packers released him in March, but he plans on playing this year after missing most of Green Bay's games since late in 2020 due to left-knee issues. If Bakhtiari can prove that he's healthy this summer, he'll likely latch on with a team in need of some help at the tackle spots on their offensive line, although it remains to be seen if he'll return to starting duties.
Former Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams is visiting with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. The Seahawks released Adams in March after he suffered yet another injury in 2023 that limited him to just nine games played. The 28-year-old former sixth overall pick by Seattle in 2017 out of LSU made the Pro Bowl in three consecutive seasons from 2018-20 but hasn't played in a full season since his second year in the league in 2018 due to injuries. When he was healthy earlier in his career with the Jets, Adams was the most valuable defensive back in IDP leagues because of his elite tackling ability and pass-rushing skills. All of his injuries over the years have taken their toll, and he's no longer the elite safety we've come to know him as, although Baltimore would be a nice landing spot as he tries to bounce back in 2024.
Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell (leg) was back in his element at organized team activities on Tuesday while running routes. Dell has proved to be extremely resilient this offseason after recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg as a victim of a mass shooting in Florida after he previously suffered a season-ending broken fibula in his rookie season in 2023. The 24-year-old third-round pick last year out of Houston was a young star on the rise while catching passes from quarterback C.J. Stroud before suffering a broken fibula, as he caught 47 of his 75 targets for 709 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games (eight starts). There's a lot to like about Dell's long-term outlook, but unfortunately he could take a step back in Year 2 after the Texans added Stefon Diggs this offseason to a wideout room that already included Nico Collins, Noah Brown and Robert Woods.
The photographer who said that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice punched him has asked the police to drop the charges. It's good news for Rice, who has had an eventful offseason off the field, to say the least. However, the 24-year-old second-year pass-catcher is still likely facing a suspension after he left the scene of a six-car accident in Dallas in late March. Rice is facing charges of aggravated assault, collision involving serious bodily injury and collision involving injury. We don't know exactly how many games Rice is going to be suspended to start the 2024 season, but the impending suspension is obviously bad news for his fantasy value after he won a Super Bowl ring in his rookie season and had a 79-938-7 line in 16 regular-season games (eight starts).
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has dropped around 10 to 15 pounds this offseason and is down to 220 pounds, which is his ideal playing weight this year as he seeks more agility/escapability. Tagovailoa is currently set to play on his fifth-year option in 2024, but sources are optimistic that the former first-rounder and the Dolphins will be able to work out a long-term contract extension before the 2024 regular season starts this fall. Reports recently were overblown that Tagovailoa was skipping some of the team's offseason meetings. He reported to the first day of voluntary organized team activities on Monday and was seen throwing passes on Tuesday, so he remains fully committed to Miami and is unlikely to stage any sort of holdout this summer. The Dolphins aren't too concerned that Tua's drop in weight will make him more fragile. Tagovailoa doesn't have high-end fantasy upside, but he's at least a midrange QB1 in Miami's high-scoring offense.
