Braxton Garrett News
The Miami Marlins reinstated left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday and placed right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move with a right-shoulder impingement. Garrett, who hasn't pitch in the big leagues yet in 2024, is expected to make his first start of the year on Sunday against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. The 26-year-old has returned from a shoulder impingement of his own. Even though Sunday's matchup against the Phils isn't the best he could have for his first start back, Garrett is worth rostering in most mixed leagues now that he's healthy. Garrett looked good on his minor-league rehab assignment and went 9-7 last year with a 3.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with a career-high 156 K's in 159 2/3 innings over 31 outings (30 starts).
Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) dominated on Monday in his minor-league rehab start with the team's Florida Complex League affiliate, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit allowed while walking one and striking out 13. Fantasy managers should take this outing with a grain of salt because it was against rookie-level competition, but it's nevertheless a good sign for a pitcher that appears to be on the cusp of making his 2024 big-league debut. The 26-year-old is recovering from a left-shoulder impingement and should be able to make his next start with the Marlins after making five rehab starts. If Garrett is available in your mixed fantasy league, he deserves to be picked up ASAP after his mini breakout season in 2023.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (shoulder) is scheduled to throw six innings or 75 pitches at the club's Florida Complex League in rookie ball on Monday. Although Garrett tossed five scoreless innings of one-hit ball on 61 pitches with Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, his next appearance will not come with the major-league roster as some may have anticipated. The Marlins appear to be taking a cautious approach with Garrett, who has previously experienced "dead arm" on his way back from a left shoulder impingement. He's looking at a mid-to-late May return to Miami's rotation. Unheralded rookie Roddery Munoz will get at least one more turn in the big-league rotation, carrying an impressive 2.45 ERA (3.77 FIP), 0.72 WHIP, and 14:3 K:BB over 11 innings (two starts), but he'll have his work cut out in his next projected start on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett is coming off his best year as a pro. He finished the 2023 season with a 3.66 ERA and 156 strikeouts across a career-high 159.2 innings pitched. Garrett was solid in 31 appearances (30 starts) for the Marlins last year and had nine games with at least seven strikeouts and two earned runs or less allowed. The southpaw also gave up two walks or less in 29 of those 31 appearances, including no walks allowed in 11 contests. The 26-year-old left-hander posted career bests in WHIP (1.146), BB/9 (1.6), and H/9 (8.7) during the 2023 season and has a career 8.9 SO/9 over his 58 Major League games pitched. Garrett was a surprise waiver wire pickup last year and could provide some late-round value in 2024 drafts this season.
