Carlos Carrasco News
Veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco has made the Cleveland Guardians' Opening Day starting rotation and is slated to make his 2024 debut on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics and right-hander Paul Blackburn. Although the 37-year-old Carrasco doesn't have much fantasy appeal these days, he could be a sneaky streamer this weekend against the A's. We'll see how Carrasco fares to open the season, but when Gavin Williams (elbow) is healthy, there's a good chance Carrasco will be bumped from the rotation. In 20 starts (90 innings) for the New York Mets in 2023, he wasn't good, going 3-8 with a 6.80 ERA (5.86 FIP) and 1.70 WHIP while walking 38 and striking out 66. Carrasco will most likely serve as a multi-inning reliever for Cleveland for most of the year.
Cleveland Guardians right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco (finger) is expected to start Saturday's Spring Training game against the Cincinnati Reds, according to Nick Camino of WKYC. Carrasco inked a minor league deal this season with the Guardians, for whom he played 11 seasons from 2010 through 2020. He most recently pitched for the New York Mets, posting a 4.93 xFIP, 6.60 K/9, and 3.80 BB/9 through 20 starts last year before a 50-pound barbell fell on his finger and prematurely ended his season. A trusted veteran presence familiar with the Cleveland system, Carrasco will compete for a back-of-the-rotation role in camp.
Free-agent right-hander Carlos Carrasco signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training on Saturday with the Cleveland Guardians, according to sources. The 36-year-old veteran pitched for the Guardians from 2009-20. He spent the last three seasons with the Mets, going 19-20 with a bloated 5.21 ERA (4.55 FIP) and 1.46 WHIP with 97 walks and 268 strikeouts in 295 2/3 innings over 61 starts. He was even worse in 2023, posting a 6.80 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 90 innings over 20 starts before fracturing his finger in September. The Guardians' starting rotation is already pretty set heading into the 2024 season, so Carrasco could open the year in a middle-relief role out of Cleveland's bullpen, making him unattractive in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Carlos Carrasco returned to form in 2020 following a battle with Leukemia in 2019 which limited him to just 80 innings pitched that season. In 2020 with Cleveland, Carrasco posted a 2.91 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and struck out 82 batters in 62 IP over 12 starts. His underlying 2020 pitching metrics largely mirrored his 2018 metrics when he struck out 231 batters over 192 IP and posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. This included a 29.3% strikeout rate (top-23% of MLB), as well as an overall exit velocity, barrel rate, and launch angle allowed which were right around or slightly below his 2018 numbers. Managers may be leery of Carrasco's uncharacteristic 2020 walk rate of 9.6% (up from 4.7% and 5.5% in 2019 and 2018, respectively). Don't be. This walk rate increase resulted from a 24 IP span in August in which he walked 15 batters. Carrasco appeared to right the ship in September when he only allowed 10 free passes over 32 IP. Heading into 2021, Carrasco should see a bump to his fantasy ceiling pitching for the New York Mets. If Carrasco can remain healthy, he should provide managers with 170-190 IP, elite ratios, along with, dare we say, 15 or more wins now that the Mets have added Francisco Lindor to the lineup and bolstered their bullpen with Trevor May. Should Carrasco maintain his excellent strikeout rate, courtesy of a slider, changeup, and curveball which all had whiff rates north of 34% in 2020, he should post 200+ strikeouts in 2021. With an ADP of 69, Carrasco projects as a high-end fantasy SP2 despite the move to the more competitive N.L. East.
