Evan Phillips News
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Evan Phillips (hamstring) is set to throw off a mound on Wednesday. Working his way back from a strained right hamstring, Phillips is ready for his first bullpen session since hitting the injured list and should be able to re-enter LA's bullpen in late May if all continues to go well in his recovery. In 14 appearances before going down, the 29-year-old right-hander was electric while yielding a lone run and striking out 17, walking four, and converting each of his eight save chances over 13 2/3 innings of work. Veteran Daniel Hudson is likely the best bet for fantasy managers trying to pick up some saves in Phillips' stead, notching a 3.18 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and a sparkling 19:1 K:BB with two saves over 17 innings for the Dodgers this year.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Evan Phillips (hamstring) played catch on Friday and continues to progress from his Grade 1 right-hamstring strain. Phillips has been on the 15-day injured list for only five days and should be ready to return when he's eligible on May 19 since he's not dealing with any kind of injury to his arm. As the closer out of the Dodgers' bullpen when healthy, the 29-year-old needs to be rostered in all fantasy formats despite missing some time with a hamstring injury. Before going on the shelf, Phillips was sporting a fantastic 0.66 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, eight saves, four walks and 17 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings in 2024. Since Phillips has been injured, both lefty Alex Vesia and veteran righty Daniel Hudson have picked up saves. Hudson is the better bet for more saves until Phillips is eligible to return.
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Evan Phillips (hamstring) was placed on the injured list earlier on Sunday afternoon, and it has been revealed that he is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The Dodgers are hopeful that Phillips can return after his 15-day stint of being sidelined. The 29-year-old has been the primary ninth-inning option for manager Dave Roberts so far this year and he has already notched eight saves. In his absence, expect the Dodgers to adopt a committee approach, featuring Daniel Hudson, Alex Vesia, and Joe Kelly, among others.

Evan Phillips emerged as the Dodgers closer in 2023 and it's easy to see why. After posting a 1.14 ERA in 2022 (63.0 IP), Phillips had a 2-4 W-L record, 2.05 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 66 Ks and 24 saves (61.1 IP) last year. Entering the season, there were concerns that Phillips would be in a job share or lose the role to Daniel Hudson when he returned from the IL. Hudson ended up pitching three innings all year and Phillips dominated in the role. His 3.37 xFIP and 3.08 SIERA suggest we will see regression in 2024. But he also had a 2.72 xFIP and 2.34 SIERA in 2022 so that's now two consecutive years in which he's outperformed his underlying numbers. That is also assisted by his excellent strikeout and walk numbers. Phillips' 28.2% K% ranked in the 83rd percentile while his 5.6% BB% ranked in the 88th percentile. His 22.6% K-BB% ranked 23rd among the 162 qualified relievers and those numbers provide a solid floor. Phillips once again is finding himself being drafted outside the top tier of closers. And once again, he is set to reward fantasy managers who draft him.
