Hyun Jin Ryu News
Korean media reported Monday that free-agent starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu signed a contract with his former KBO team, the Hanwha Eagles. The team has not confirmed the deal's finalization. The 36-year-old lefty played with the team from 2006 through 2012, earning Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards in 2006. His big-league experience with the Dodgers and Blue Jays offered some solid fantasy seasons from 2013 through 2023. However, numerous injuries limited him to just 79 innings pitched over the last two seasons. At this point, Ryu can be crossed off the list of potential late-round fantasy options.
Free-agent left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu is said to be entertaining an offer from his former Korean Baseball Organization team, the Hanwa Eagles. Ryu pitched for the Eagles from 2006 to 2012 and said that he will finish his career with the team. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw returned from Tommy John surgery last August and went 3-3 with a 3.46 ERA (4.91 FIP) and 1.29 WHIP with 14 walks and only 38 strikeouts in 52 innings in 11 starts down the stretch in his fourth year with the Toronto Blue Jays. His velocity was down, which shouldn't come as a huge surprise coming off Tommy John surgery, but at Ryu's age, he's no longer the strikeout artist he once was. Ryu's changeup also was much more hittable. Heading into his age-37 campaign and likely to head back to Korea, he's off the fantasy radar in 2024.
Toronto Blue Jays southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu is ready for his next start, which will come on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics. The veteran arm has been lights out since making his season debut on August 1, posting a 2.48 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and a 3-1 record across 29 innings of work. Still, Ryu's fantasy value is limited in standard formats with the low strikeout numbers and he can be kept on the waiver wire for most of his starts in shallow leagues. The A's are one of the worst teams in baseball offensively, though, so fantasy owners should start Ryu wherever they can.

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was one of the few constants in a world of uncertainty in 2020. The $80 million free agent signing was exactly what Toronto needed as he led the team in starts (12), innings (67), wins (five), and strikeouts (72). Ryu's success predates the pandemic-shortened season, however. Dating back to 2018 with the Dodgers, Ryu has a 2.30 ERA supported by a 3.06 FIP across a 332 inning sample. Ryu keeps hitters off balance with an expanded arsenal, throwing all five of his pitches at least 10 percent of the time with a 17 MPH difference between his fastball and off-speed pitches. As a result, he's one of the elite pitchers in avoiding hard contact. His 3.2 percent barrel rate last season was among the best in the game and his 86.6 MPH average exit velocity over the last three years is in the top eighth percentile in baseball. Ryu isn't a strikeout artist, he has just a 22.3 percent career K-rate, but he'll put up solid ratios and pitch plenty of innings as the ace of the Blue Jays. He's a solid second-starter for fantasy and is fair value around pick 75 in fantasy drafts.
